September might have looked far at the beginning of the summer, but it is already around the corner. And with it comes Le Zeus, another shapeshift of the famous Monsieur Smokey. It has been a long time since the creative slot provider Hacksaw Gaming presented Le Bandit (2023) and followed the idea up with Le Pharaoh (2024).

This time, Smokey, the raging raccoon, has made its way to Mount Olympus and is about to unleash “divine chaos”. Our hairy friend is so good in disguise that he managed to cheat not only Parisians, but the good people of Egypt, the vikings, and even the Elvis fans. Le Zeus comes with a 6x5 grid and Le Pharaoh’s 19 lines, paying from the leftmost reel to the right. The original game came with Cluster Pays, a mechanic used again in the series, in the last installment. Hacksaw Gaming experimented with a ways-to-win engine in Le Viking for the sake of the bonus features and minigames, there.

At first glance, Le Zeus looks pretty much the same, with the Autoplay, Turbo, Super Turbo, and Buy Bonus panel, offering a bonus bet and several other options. However, the provider has decided to switch from the legendary Golden Squares to a different mechanic with Mystery symbols. Le Viking was the only game from the series that is missing the Golden Squares, and here is now Le Zeus.

Le Zeus presents a new mechanic for the Le series, both in the base game and during the bonus rounds. Yes, rounds, in plural, because the provider has once again added not one but three awesome Free Spins modes. It’s not particularly difficult to run them, or at least the more basic one, and the good news is that this time, they offer a completely different experience!

Mystery Reveal

Mystery Reveal replaces Golden Squares, but except for the visualization ways, the feature's core mechanics seem the same. The Mystery Symbols can land on reels 2 to 5 in the main game, and when they do, they land vertically adjacent. All Mystery symbols that have landed will display the same high-valued symbol, a wild, or a Mystery Reel/

In case they reveal a high-paying symbol or a wild, and a win was achieved, a respin sequence will begin. The Mystery symbols will transform back to Mystery and remain locked on their positions, while the rest of the grid will respin. The feature can continue indefinitely and will be over when a respin with no winning combinations occurs, or a Mystery Reel is created.

If one or more Mystery Symbols land on the same reel, they will form a Mystery Reel, which will spin. Positions on it will reveal Coins, Clovers, Diamonds, or Pots of Gold. Each symbol except for the last one will reveal a value as follows:

• Bronze Coins - 0.20x, 0.50x, 1x, 2x, 3x, or 4x the bet
• Silver Coins - 5x, 10x, 15x, or 20x the bet
• Gold Coins - 25x, 50x, or 100x the bet
• Diamond Symbols - 150x, 250x, or 500x the bet
• Clover Symbols - x2, x3, x4, x5, x10, or x20

Green Clovers and Gold Clovers award multipliers applicable to Coins and Pots of Gold. They activate after all Coins have revealed their cash values. Green Clovers award their multipliers to symbols on adjacent squares, while Gold Clovers do the same to all Coins and Pots of Gold symbols.

Pots of Gold have a Collect power and activate after the Clovers have multiplied the Coins and other existing Pots of Gold. New ones collect all cash values from Coins, Diamonds, and Pots of Gold. Once all that is done, all Mystery instances that have been covered by Coins, Diamonds, and Clovers will respin to reveal new symbols.

Bonus Game - Bolt & Run

Three scatters landing simultaneously in the base game will award Bolt & Run with 8 free spins. The minimum Coin value for this minigame is 1x the bet. During Bolt & Run, all Mystery symbols that land will be sticky. They will remain in their positions and reactivate for each free spin.

Bonus Game - Myth-Taken Identity

Four scatters in the base game trigger the Myth-Taken Identity bonus with 8 free spins. The minigame uses the main game mechanics and adds a Mystery Meter in the top right corner of your screen. The Mystery symbols fill it and in order to level-up, you’ll need 25 of them in total. When you succeed, you’ll get a Reward Spin!

Reward Spins cover the whole board with Coins, Diamonds, Clovers, or Pots of Gold only for a tremendous winning potential. There are 4 levels of Reward Spins, and on each subsequent one, the lowest cash symbol will be removed - Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

There will be hardly anyone who has tried the previous Le slots by Hacksaw to believe that Le Zeus will be anything but a masterpiece. The Mythical theme is something new for the provider, but Hacksaw’s aim seems to be to go around all super-popular slot scripts. The audio and visual quality of Le Zeus is up to the highest standards, and the raccoon's comedic presence is felt just as strongly as before. Moreover, music fans will appreciate the reference to Cyndi Lauper’s song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” in the game left by the design crew with the hidden bonus choice of a name.

Our Verdict

Le Zeus refreshes the series with a new touch on proven mechanics. Whether the shift from Golden Squares to Mystery Symbols is successful is to be decided by players. I personally find the changes as a good thing, although a new symbol during the Mystery Reel reveal would have been appreciated.

Le Zeus sounds and feels a bit like Ze Zeus, another exciting online slot by Hacksaw Gaming released not long ago (2024). The core mechanic there is Divine Squares, and you can benefit from Bronze, Silver, and Gold Coins, Zap of Zeus (multiplier), and Vessel of Wealth (collect). There are 3 Free Spins modes and a Bonus Buy panel, but don’t worry, the gameplay is totally different.

What worried me during the Le Zeus test is the lack of extra free spins in all 3 variants of the bonus. Of course, I don’t count the potential respins and Reward Spins, as they are another aspect of the mechanic. The retrigger option removal is strange, but I believe this is for the sake of volatility. In short, Le Zeus doesn’t fail to deliver a magnificent slot experience and has brought the series to new heights!
