Roaring Forties is a classic fruit machine developed and launched by Greentube in 2015. It comes with a retro look and features, and with juicy wins on a 5x4 grid with 40 paylines. Greentube is a skilled and well-established studio in charge of the digital department of Novomatic. It was founded in 1998 and already has nearly 550 games in its portfolio, many of which are available as cabinets across top land-based casinos. Roaring Forties is built on the NovoSDK platform, a technology developed in-house by Novomatic.

Being one of the first online slot studios on the market, Greentube has a never-ending passion for creating classic slots. Roaring Forties is one of them, and although the title lacks an official continuation, in 2017, the provider released Roaring Wilds. Bells follow Sevens in the paytable and award 1x, 2.50x, and 7.50x, while Grapes and Watermelons - 0.50x, 2x, and 5x, each. The lowest-valued symbols in the game are Lemons, Oranges, Plums, and Cherries, and each of them pays 0.20x, 1x, and 2.50x the wager. The wild symbol substitutes for all the others and just like them often lands in stacks.

The scatter symbol does not do that, but it pays from any position independently of any lines. The Star awards 2x, 20x, or 500x the bet for 3 to 5 in view! Roaring Forties is characterized by medium levels of volatility - 3 out of 5 by Greentube’s scale. It comes with a betting range starting from €0.40 and reaching from €40 to €200, depending on the selected online casino. The win cap is limited to a massive 40,000x the stake!

The Roaring Forties RTP ranges and the highest rate is 95.48%, which is slightly below the expected average. When you change the gambling platform, always check the RTP because at least 2 alternative versions are also available - 92.12% and 90.35%. The Hit Frequency rate is also lower than usual - 15%, but the gameplay is dynamic enough, in my opinion.

Roaring Forties lacks bonus features and modifiers if we exclude the stacked symbols, which you’ll quickly notice on all reels. Even the wilds often cover multiple positions, although they seem to be landing on reels 2, 3, and 4 only. Anyway, besides that, the game is empty of bonuses, but one, which is optional.

Gamble

Gamble Game can be enabled or disabled from a switch in the Settings menu. It’s automatically off if you activate Autoplay. Gamble Game allows players to risk their wins up to 5 times in a row by selecting Red or Black for the card face-down. A success will double the sum, while a failure will cost the whole stack. This feature lowers the slot’s RTP rate, so you should use it with caution!

Theme & Graphics

Roaring Forties is another old-fashioned slot by Greentube with a Fruits theme and generic visuals. The large grid is placed in the middle with two large grey quadrates on both sides and on a yellow-orange background. All active paylines are pinned on both sides of the board and show when a win appears.

The almost complete lack of animation effects was expected, just like the beeps and other sounds typical for retro one-handed bandits. Despite all that, Roaring Forties is fully compatible with every device and is playable in landscape and portrait modes. It’s also part of the Game Twist App, providing access to hundreds of slots. Pros And Cons Of Roaring Forties Slot

Our Verdict

Roaring Forties was quite a successful slot back in the days, and I'm confident that it attracts attention even today. Indeed, it’s pretty broad and simple, offering almost nothing but line wins, scatter payouts, and wild substitutions. Greentube has plenty of this in its catalog, including Plenty of Fruit 40 and Cash Runner, which I recommend.

Then again, Roaring Forties still have those 2 special symbols and some don’t. It also comes with mild volatility, despite a lower RTP, and an impressive max win of 40,000x the bet. Honestly, I was not ready for this, but according to Greentube’s presentation, this generic-looking machine has such potential.

It’s hard to compare really, because most titles in this sub-category depend on progressive jackpots to attract players. Blazin Hot 7s Big Bonus by Light & Wonder, for example, is magnificent, but pays up to 2,300x. 40 Super Hot is another great suggestion for a fruity machine and it has almost a legendary status in the Amusnet Interactive portfolio.

So, in general, Roaring Forties has its ups and downs like any online slot, especially which has been released a decade ago. If you enjoy simple games and the Fruit Fiesta and Fruit Salad series seem attractive, then this machine is one to try. It might not be spectacular or modern, but it can supply a decent pile of cash!
