Thor’s Rage (Red Tiger) Review

I can’t help but wonder what goes through a developer’s mind when something like Thor’s Rage comes out. Does a manager pull up to the office one morning and say, ‘Have you seen Gates of Olympus? We need that too!’? Well, it’s not unusual for iGaming studios to ‘draw inspiration’ from top-performing titles. If a formula has already proven to be successful, why not? So, yeah, Thor’s Rage is very much a GOO wannabe, but not a complete copycat – one or two things are different. Let’s take a look.

For once, it’s the setting that makes the biggest difference. The title already gives the environmental shift away – we’re not in Zeus’s Greek domain anymore, but in the snowy realm of Norse mythology, with Thor now being the top star. The god of thunder stands to the right of the reels and is your companion for the game. But the man isn’t just there for cosmetic purposes – every once in a while, he’ll slam Mjolnir onto the reels, charging them with multipliers or wild symbols, which I’ll explain shortly in the corresponding section of my Thor’s Rage slot review.

The game transports you to Asgard, home of the Æsir gods, with the reels set against what seems to be the Royal Palace of Valaskjalf, surrounded by snowcapped mountains and golden statues. The visuals are of top-notch quality – you shouldn’t expect anything less from Red Tiger – with every texture and symbol polished to perfection. The whole scene feels alive thanks to the abundance of animations – drifting clouds, lightning, and Thor himself. The end result is an epic presentation that pretty much matches the scope of the theme.

As we get closer to the gameplay, though, Thor’s Rage doesn’t stray far from the formula laid down in Pragmatic’s smash hit. The action takes place on a 6x5 grid where 8 or more matching symbols pay anywhere in view. Each win triggers a cascading sequence – winning symbols disappear, allowing new ones to drop into place, potentially forming new winning combinations. There’s no cap on how many chain reactions can occur in a single spin. It’s all pretty standard, no surprises in that regard.

Before we dive into the features and the main twist Thor’s Rage brings to the table, let’s talk numbers. The volatility is rated 4 out of 5, putting it in the medium-to-high range. According to the game’s sheet on Evolution’s website (Evolution Gaming being the parent company of NetEnt, which in turn owns Red Tiger), the hit frequency is evaluated as 5 out of 5, whatever that means. From my own experience, I wouldn’t expect wins to land often – the game can feel pretty brutal at times.

As with most Red Tiger releases, Thor’s Rage is available in two versions – one with the provider’s Daily Drop jackpot network and one without. Wild Symbols

Wilds do their usual job of substituting for all regular symbols to help form wins, but there’s more to them. Instead of disappearing after they’re used in a win, Wilds transform into multiplier symbols for the next cascade, giving you a guaranteed win boost.

Multipliers

Multiplier symbols are the most desired in Thor’s Rage, being the key to big wins. After all cascading processes are complete, any multipliers in view are added together, and the total sum will be applied to the accumulated winnings from that spin. Multipliers can range anywhere from 2x all the way up to a staggering 1000x.

Free Spins

Landing 4, 5, or 6 scatter symbols awards 15 free spins. During the bonus, any multiplier that takes part in a win is added and stored as the Total Multiplier, which doesn’t reset between spins. Each time a new multiplier contributes to a win, it’s added to the current value, applied to that win, and then carried forward for the rest of the round. Finally, hitting 3 or more scatters during the feature adds an extra 5 spins, no limit.

Our Verdict

Having spent some time with this Red Tiger’s release, I can say it’s not the worst alternative to Gates of Olympus. And it’s far from the best. We’ve seen so many games try to imitate Pragmatic Play’s success, and while this one at least freshens things up with a Norse setting, the core gameplay is still the same. Is it enough to keep players coming back? Unlikely.

I do appreciate the superb presentation – Red Tiger absolutely nailed the look and feel of Asgard, and the multipliers up to 1,000x are certainly tempting, which is on par with what the enhanced Gates of Olympus 1000 edition offers. And I definitely like the addition of Wilds and how they transform into multipliers, yet given how elusive they are, they barely make a difference, however.

In the end, my verdict is that Thor’s Rage can be a decent choice if you’re in the mood for a familiar experience with a change of scenery. It all comes down to what deity you like more – Thor or Zeus, or whichever other god is headlining another Gates of Olympus clone.
