It’s hard to believe that the original Snake Arena was released all the way back in 2019, but perhaps that’s because we still have Snake Arena Dream Drop fresh in mind, which dropped in 2022. Anyway, Relax Gaming’s Snake Arena 2 turns the medieval castle of the predecessors into a gritty cyberpunk coliseum filled with robotic insects and a massive, mechanical snake battling against what is now called Slayers.

The grid is expanded to a 6x4 format in Snake Arena 2, but, paradoxically, the number of paylines is reduced from 30 to 14. You win by landing 3 to 6 matching symbols across at least one of these paylines, starting from the leftmost reel. The premium symbols, consisting of 4 different-color robotic insects, pay 10x, 16x, or 20x your stake for 6 of a kind wins. The royal symbols all pay 5x your stake for the same, and you can play with bet levels ranging from €0.10 to €20 per spin.

Like before, the Wild Chase feature takes center stage in the base game. However, it’s been significantly upgraded in Snake Arena 2. Wild Chase

The robotic snake above the reels is dormant by default, but can spring to life at the start of any spin. Also, below the reels, you’ll get 1 to 5 Slayers randomly on each spin, each revealing a multiplier between x2 and x1,000. Any wild symbol that lands on a reel with a Slayer below will apply the Slayer’s multiplier to any win it is part of.

If the snake comes to life, it targets a Slayer, turning the whole reel wild with the Slayer’s multiplier. This Wild Chase continues until all present Slayer reels are turned wild, or until the snake hits a reel with no Slayer. If more than one multiplier wild reel is part of the same win, the multipliers are added together before being applied.

Bonus Round Pick Menu

Scatter symbols serve double duty as Wild symbols in Snake Arena 2, and they can appear on any reel. The Pick Mode triggers when you land 3 or 4 scatter symbols on the same spin, allowing you to choose either Slayer Free Spins or Arena Free Spins when you land 3 triggering scatters. Landing 4 triggering scatters allows you to select either Super Slayer Free Spins or Super Arena Free Spins.

The Slayer Bonus Round awards 5 free spins where the Snake is always active to hunt Slayers, turning reels into multiplier wild reels. You win +5 free spins from landing 3 scatters, while landing 4 scatters upgrades the bonus to the Super Slayer bonus round with +5 free spins added.

Now, all multiplier wild reels that are created remain in play for the duration of the super bonus round. Each snake attack on existing wild reels increases the wild multiplier for that reel, and landing 3 scatters awards +5 super free spins. Eligible players can purchase extra free spins after the bonus round ends, but only if the price is below what they have left of their winnings or below 100x.

Arena Free Spins & Super Arena Free Spins

The Arena Bonus Round also gives you 5 free spins, but plays out on a 6x6 grid that can be expanded to 8x8. With rows 1 and 8 starting as locked, the symbols are not active on these rows before the grid expands. First, you land feature symbols and Snake Eggs, and then the Snake and Slayer symbols appear on empty positions. Super Slayers land with multipliers of x2 to x5.

The Snake moves around to attack each Slayer, removing all symbols in its way, which adds to your win. Theme & Graphics

Snake Arena 2 plays out in a futuristic arena pit, encircled by pulsing blue plasma tubes and sheer metallic walls. The massive robotic serpent is coiled above the reels like a slithering, metallic beast, with Slayers appearing below the reels with their hoods, shields, and daggers. Different robotic insects populate the reels, including what looks like spiders, ants, and bees. Our Verdict

Snake Arena 2 is exactly what a sequel can and should be. Instead of simply adding a few tweaks and calling it a day, like many developers tend to do, Relax Gaming has gone for a full-blown overhaul. Granted, the intro in the first game is actually more fun and engaging than what you get in Snake Arena 2, and the characters and visual style of the original are also arguably more charming. However, you’ll soon get used to the futuristic design and robotic creatures you get to meet this time.

Neither the original Snake Arena nor the more potent Dream Drop version has been a massive success for Relax Gaming. It’s therefore understandable that they went back to the drawing board for this follow-up and dialed up the complexity several notches. The base game is more action-packed and potent this time, as you can potentially turn up to all 6 reels into multiplier wilds with up to x1,000 per reel. Multipliers from the Slayers are also added to regular wilds, making the base game far more enjoyable than in the original game.

While the 90s snake game-inspired bonus round had its nostalgic charm in the first game, the snake eating its own tail became annoying rather quickly. Snake Arena 2 takes the bonus round to a whole new level. Not only can you now choose a bonus round version where the snake is always actively chasing Slayers, which again turn reels into multiplier wilds, but the Arena feature is now packed to the gills with feature symbols. Some of these are highly innovative to boot, with plenty of value accumulation and adding.

The Slayer bonus round, while a tad more orthodox since it boils down to additive multiplier wild reels, is not to be underestimated, though. Massive wild multipliers can deliver payouts of up to 50,000x your stake, which is in a whole other league than the underwhelming 2,758x win cap of the original game. By absorbing its predecessor's core conflict and surrounding it with a staggering array of modern mechanics and robotic aesthetics, Snake Arena 2 is a high-octane, bulked-up behemoth that eats the original game for lunch.
