Rectangle Games are known for their mobile-first approach, and Money Mania is no exception. The arcade cabinet design with the curved reels is bound to tug on some nostalgic heartstrings, and the same goes for the Monopoly man lookalike that figures on the multiplier symbols. However, beneath the retro charm you’ll find some interesting features, including a bonus round that can deliver solid payouts. Before we get to all that, however, let’s cover the basics.

You start by choosing your preferred bet level, ranging from €0.10 to €100 per spin in the Money Mania slot. If a symbol is fully in view on the middle reel with non-matching symbols on the leftmost and rightmost reels, the leftmost and rightmost reels will respin once. This may land you the matching symbols you need for a payout or bonus round trigger. Also, if there are matching symbols on the leftmost and rightmost reels with no symbol fully in view on the middle reel, the middle reel may nudge downwards or upwards once. This can complete the win or trigger the bonus round, depending on which symbol you get fully in view on the middle reel, if any.

Multiplier Symbols

You can land multiplier symbols on the middle reel, and these range from x2 to x100. If you land a multiplier symbol fully in view on the middle reel, together with matching symbols on the leftmost and rightmost reels, the win is boosted by the multiplier value before it’s paid. This means that you can win up to 1,000x your stake from a single spin.

Bonus Round

The bonus round triggers when you land a free spin symbol fully in view on the middle reel with matching symbols of any kind on the leftmost and rightmost reels. The triggering spin pays the value of the triggering symbol, and the free spin symbol awards the stated number of either 5, 10, or 20 free spins. You can retrigger the bonus round the same way, and other than that, the feature plays out similarly to the base game.

Theme & Graphics

Money Mania looks like an old-school arcade gaming cabinet, complete with neon-purple colors and a curved screen. This retro presentation suits the money-centric theme quite well, and the portrait mode layout makes Money Mania optimized for on-the-go play. A Monopoly man lookalike appears on the multiplier symbols, while a classical-looking bank appears on regular pay symbols. Completed symbols resemble the US dollar to some degree, not least because of the characteristic green color. The jazzy soundtrack keeps the atmosphere lively as you spin your way to riches.

Pros and Cons of Money Mania

Our Verdict

Money Mania is a charming little game in the wealth genre, no doubt about that. The curved cabinet layout combined with the neon-purple glow of the retro-future arcade aesthetic had me intrigued from the start. I’m not so sold on the soundtrack of this game, though, as it came across as a bit too imposing and didn’t really agree with my ears. A neat 8-bit spin sound would’ve served the visuals better, at least in my view, and what few sound effects there are sadly drown in the overpowering soundtrack.

The game looks great on mobile, fitting the portrait mode screen like a glove. Nostalgia abounds with the green banknotes and the Monopoly man lookalike added to the mix, and the payout system, while not unheard of, still feels refreshing. I also like that you can choose between 3 spin speed settings, and I preferred the max speed setting myself. While the hit rate is not disclosed, you can expect to win something every 4-5 spins on average, or at least that’s what I experienced in my test session.

Usually, you get a lower multiplier combined with a low- to mid-sized win. I got plenty of x2 to x5 multipliers boosting wins of 0.1x or 0.5x, with occasional larger wins like 10x boosted by x3 or x4 multipliers. The respin and nudge features trigger quite frequently to help you out, but they do not guarantee a win. After a while, it got a bit repetitive, partly because all the symbols look so similar. Money Mania is not really a game I would play in longer stretches but more of a gem to enjoy between more serious gambling sessions.

The bonus round was a tad disappointing, to be honest. It offers nothing new that makes it stand out from the relatively monotonous base game. Sure, you can win extra free spins via retriggers, but there are no new features to see. It can be over in a blink with the turbo maxed out, and the 2,000x max win is a tad low for this volatility level. If you’re in the market for a simple gaming session or a palate cleanser, Money Mania is a good candidate. However, like I said, it’s best for shorter sessions when you just want to kill some time.
