Mega Charged Cash takes you right into a thunderstorm crackling with high-voltage energy, and Blueprint Gaming has decided to ditch paylines and regular pay symbols completely this time. Set against a backdrop of blue, swirling storm clouds, this slot game is all about cash collection and power up symbols from the top horizontal power up reel. However, let’s not get ahead of ourselves and cover the basics of this unusual game before we get to the heart of it.

You start by choosing your preferred bet level, ranging from €0.10 to €20 per spin. This may not appeal to hardcore highrollers, but most players are probably okay with it. Mega Charged Cash plays out on a 6x4 grid, which is larger than most slots. In addition, there is a horizontal top reel running across the 4 middle positions. As mentioned, there are no regular line wins in this game, so it kind of feels like you’re in a bonus round from the get-go.

However, that being said, the base game payouts come along more rarely than in most traditional slots. You will land blanks, cash symbols worth up to 100x, and collect symbols on reels 1 and 6. If at least one collect symbol is present, it collects all cash prizes in view, and these are awarded as your winnings. To be clear, each collect symbol collects all cash prizes, and you can land up to 8 collect symbols if you fill both reels 1 and 6. Collect symbols on the top horizontal power up reel collect cash symbols on the reel below.

The power up reel can also deliver multiplier symbols of up to x10, and these boost any win accordingly. Collect symbols are collected in meters above reels 1 and 6, triggering either a random cash symbol add or the power spins bonus. This bonus is also all about cash collection, with a randomly triggered multiplier of up to x10 to boost your wins. Collect Feature

Landing the Cash symbol and Collect symbol on the same spin triggers the Collect Feature. The Collect symbols can only land on the first and last reels, while the Cash symbol can appear anywhere. The Cash symbols land with values ranging from 0.5x to 100x your stake, and each present Collect symbol gathers the prizes from these symbols before they are awarded as a win. You can also land Collect symbols on the Power Up Reels, but these collect only the Cash symbol values from the reel directly below.

Power Up Reels

The Power Up Reels are located above reels 2 to 5, and they spin together with the regular reels per round. The Power Up Reels can land blanks, Collect symbols, Cash symbols, and Multiplier symbols. You need a Collect symbol in view to benefit from the upgrades offered by the Power Up Reels. The Multiplier symbols will boost any Cash symbol by x2, x3, x4, x5, or x10. A different Multiplier symbol may add between 0.5x and 5x your stake to the Cash prize symbols on the reel directly below. The Multipliers may also boost any Power Spin, applicable to the reel directly below.

Charge It Up

Collect symbols are used to charge either the Cash Bolt or Power Spin meter sitting on top of the first and last reels. The Cash Bolt or Power Spin features can trigger randomly whenever a Collect symbol is collected in the respective meters. Triggering the Cash Bolt feature adds a random number of Cash symbols to the reels. Triggering the Power Spin feature adds a random number of Power Spin symbols to the reels, triggering the Power Spins bonus round.

Power Spins Bonus Round

The Power Spins Bonus Round may also trigger when you land a Collect symbol and a Power Spin symbol in view on the same spin, awarding 2 to 10 free Power Spins per Power Spin symbol collected. The Power Spins play out similar to the base game, but the X Charge feature may randomly be activated to boost wins by a random multiplier between x2 and x10.

Eligible players can turn on Power Play mode via the Power Play button located to the left of the reels. This will cost you 5x your regular stake, and it increases your Power Spins chances. Our Verdict

Mega Charged Cash is a textbook example of taking a tried and tested concept and cranking up the voltage to see if you can get even more sparks to fly. The cash collection system has a loyal niche following, and Blueprint takes it a step further in this release by stripping away regular line wins completely. I get that this will probably not be everyone’s cup of tea, but some will probably find it refreshing. It’s been done before, sure, but not quite like this.

The high-energy thunderstorm backdrop looks static at first glance, but it comes alive with pulsating lightning that is pleasing to the eye. It would’ve been a good idea, perhaps, to also include some thunder sound effects to amp up the experience, and the repetitive synth-based soundtrack isn’t doing all that much to ignite one's imagination. Overall, the presentation gets the job done, but it cannot escape coming across as a tad dated in this day and age.

I like that you can choose between 3 spin speeds, but with the turbo maxed out, you don’t even see the reels spinning. Symbols just suddenly appear, which sort of takes away the magic of slot machines. While the hit rate is not disclosed, I experienced up to 20 dead spins between wins, and the wins I got weren’t all that impressive outside of the features. The elusive collect symbol often appeared on the top power up reel, meaning it only collected the prizes directly below.

The bonus round often doesn’t feel like a bonus round either, at least not in my case, as I usually got only two Power Spins at the time. Granted, these yielded a decent payout, but don’t expect too much. Overall, Mega Charged Cash feels a bit lackluster, like something is missing, and I guess that something is regular line wins and a proper bonus round. If you’re all into cash collection, this game may be for you, but it’s hardly worthwhile if you prefer more orthodox video slots.
