Massive Studios has been around for some time but started producing online slots relatively recently. Most of the Melbourne portfolio was launched in 2024, but the company started solidly in 2025 as well. Licence to Squirrel is an intriguing addition to the list, released in March and offering two profiles with different designs and features.

The title was released slightly after Serpentina and Joker Jam, making March one of the busiest months of Massive Studios. Licence to Squirrel offers a 5x5 grid with 15 lines, paying from the leftmost reel to the right. The game is packed with a Profile Selection mechanic, which is not innovative, but I have seen it only in slots designed by much larger studios.

Basically, players can choose from Blue Dog and Red Squirrel modes, which offer different volatility, max wins, visuals, and special features. Both modes offer expanding wilds or, as the provider has labeled them, Wild Reels. There are multipliers as well, which can reach solid values, such as an Enhancer Mode and Bonus Buys. Licence to Squirrel offers the Max Win mechanic as well, which doubles the slot’s payout potential!

Licence to Squirrel pays for 3, 4, or 5 of a kind, and despite the symbol backgrounds, only those with the highest values have different designs in the two modes. Dog and Squirrel pay 2x, 10x, and 20x the bet. Houses and Slingshots award from 1x to 10x, while Pruning Shears and Hoses award between 0.60x and 5x the bet. The low-valued A, K, Q, J, and 10 pay 0.20x, 0.40x, and 1x the wager each.

Different wild symbols may land during the base game and free spins, either regular or as part of the Wild Reels feature. Each one substitutes for all line-paying symbols mentioned above. The betting range is as generous as usual for the provider - €0.10 up to €100 per spin with 29 stake levels to choose from.

The Licence to Squirrel RTP ranges between 96.51% and 96.73%, depending on the selected profile mode and type of play (regular, Enhancer, Bonus Buy, etc.). Max Win is a mechanic invented and used by Massive Studios only. It activates automatically if you choose to enable the Enhancer Mode, Buy Bonus 1, or Buy Bonus 2. Max Win doubles the payout potential of the selected mode, up to 20,000x in Blue Dog and 50,000x in Red Squirrel.

Licence to Squirrel is quite a straightforward online slot despite the profile selection technique. When you first load the game, you will be asked to choose either “High volatility with normal wilds” or “Very high volatility with multiplying wilds”. In the following paragraphs, I’ll explain both and will introduce all the other bonus features!

Game Profiles

As I already mentioned, the Dog and Squirrel profiles offer different visuals, levels of volatility, and max wins. However, there are several other characteristics to consider before making your final choice. Dog Mode comes with an RTP of 96.73% and a higher chance of triggering the Free Spins bonus. However, the average total win during the Free Games is lower.

Expanding Wilds with Multiplier

The Bone and Acorn symbols are wild, and they may land on any symbol position in Dog and Squirrel mode, respectively. Whenever one of them lands on the grid during the base game and bonus round, it will expand to cover the whole reel. A couple of multipliers will be shown, and a quick battle will occur between the Dog and the Squirrel.

The winner will award its multiplier and the possible values are x2, x3, x4, x5, x7, x9, x10, x15, x20, x25, x30, x50, and x100. Furthermore, in Dog Mode, if the Dog wins, a random number of normal wilds will be distributed across the non-wild reels. In Squirrel Mode, if the Squirrel wins the battle, a random number of multiplying wilds will be distributed in the same fashion. In both ways, there is a chance for “more multiplying versus wilds”, whatever that means.

Free Games

As usual, scatters are the way to activate the Free Games bonus, and they act differently in the two modes. However, any expanding wilds in both modes will become sticky wilds and will remain until the end of the bonus. Free Games can’t be retriggered, but there is a Gamble Wheel that you can use to upgrade your bonus.

• Dog Mode - 3 or 4 scatters award 8 or 12 free spins and the Gamble Wheel. If you land 5 scatters, you’ll get a maximum of 16 free spins for this mode. The Gamble Wheel has sectors of 0, 10, 12, 14, and 16 (3 scatters) or 0, 14, and 16 (4 scatters). You can collect the bonus at any time or continue to gamble until you lose or win the maximum.
• Squirrel Mode - 3 or 4 scatters award 5 or 15 free spins and the Gamble Wheel. If you land 5 scatters, you’ll get a maximum of 25 free spins for this mode. The Gamble Wheel has sectors of 0, 10, 15, 20, and 25 (3 scatters) or 0, 20, and 25 (4 scatters). You can collect the bonus or continue gambling under the same rules as in Dog Mode.

Enhanced Modes & Buy Features

Enhancer allows you to increase the chance of triggering Free Games for a price of 2x in Dog Mode and 3x in Squirrel Mode. There are two Bonus Buy features, and they come with different prices and RTP rates, as listed below. Keep in mind that along with the Enhancer, they might be disabled in some countries.

• Bonus Buy 1 - 110x and 150x the bet - guarantees 3, 4, or 5 scatters (RTPs 96.51% and 96.54%)

Theme & Graphics

Licence to Squirrel is another game by Massive Studios with a fun Cartoonish theme and a lot of action. The action takes place in a garden where the playful animals are fighting a fierce battle for supremacy. The premium graphics and joyful animations are perfectly complemented by the soundtrack. Licence to Squirrel is also fully compatible with Android and iOS mobile devices.

The only drawback is the fact that the game is not particularly light. You won’t have any problems if you play it on a relatively new desktop PC or mobile device. However, older versions of operating systems and devices with low characteristics might not be the best choice. Make sure to run the free demo first before continuing with the real money variant!

Pros And Cons Of Licence to Squirrel Slot

Our Verdict

Licence to Squirrel is no doubt a fun online slot with several intriguing features and a mechanic that not many games have. But it is actually a reskin of another Massive Studios release from 2024 - Bonsai Banzai. In fact, the artwork and creativity are even better in the first title, or it is at least up to my particular taste.

Licence to Squirrel has one solid upgrade, though: the Max Win doubler in Enhancer and Buy Bonus modes. Moreover, it is always nice to play a slot with various wilds, multipliers, and wilds with multipliers! So, let’s not judge the provider too soon, although the presence of remakes in a portfolio of just 15 titles or so doesn’t seem right.

If you wish to try other slots with 2 or more profiles, there are plenty in SlotCatalog’s library. I selected a couple of titles that are truly worth checking out. Puffers Vs Sharks by Pragmatic Play offers a similar experience on a 5x5 matrix with 15 paylines and a 15,000x max win. All features replicate Bonsai Banzai and Licence to Squirrel, or it is the other way around.
