The Immortal Romance series has been around for quite a while, starting back in 2011. Over the last 15 years, we have had plenty of different versions and iterations, a proper sequel, and even roulette and bingo spin-offs. Personally, I always liked the gameplay, although the vampire romance thing, definitely not inspired by Twilight, was never really my cup of tea.

Still, today we have another reason to revisit hot vampires for every taste with Immortal Romance Assembl'Em by Stormcraft Studios. This time, the series comes back with some pretty major changes to the gameplay, moving well beyond another variation of the original formula.

The base gameplay stays pretty standard, with a 5x3 grid and 20 fixed betways paying from left to right. Wilds substitute for regular paying symbols, while Tokens sit outside the normal paytable and tie directly into the bonus game and its features.

Theme and Graphics

Immortal Romance Assembl'Em is still very much about vampires, although at this point I am not entirely sure what is happening in this universe anymore. I always assumed the series was built around a Twilight-style romantic setup with hot vampire guys and mortal women. Then I started clicking through the character Cards and found that each one comes with its own lore note. Between all five Cards, you learn that Sarah is fused with a Fire Elemental, Amber is a witch trying to undo the spell behind it, Michael got important knowledge from a codex, Troy survived being blasted by Sarah, and Varik is a new assassin character.

I was kinda flabbergasted by all this lore, but also found it pretty cool. It feels like jumping straight into season seven of some show when you only remember the basic setup from season one. What started as vampire romance somehow got to fire elementals, witches, mysterious codices, assassins, and a bunch of drama between characters.

Visually, Assembl'Em still follows the familiar Immortal Romance look. The reels sit inside a candlelit gothic mansion, with stone walls, blue lighting, and plenty of warm orange glow around the edges. Character portraits keep that mix of gothic fantasy and romance novel cover art, while the Cards sit right above the reels and become part of the main screen instead of feeling like some side feature buried in a menu.

Animation work is solid, and the moving backdrop gives the screen a bit more life. Sound design is probably my favourite part of the presentation, especially the OST during the bonus game. You can also mute voice lines, effects, and music separately, which is always useful. Assembl'Em still looks and sounds like part of the same series, just with a much busier presentation built around the new Card system.

Final Words

Immortal Romance Assembl'Em landed pretty high on my personal list. The Ultra Link&Win round has plenty going on once several Cards are active, and the five modifiers can change the bonus quite a lot depending on their levels and combination.

The main catch is the progression. Cards need a considerable number of spins before you start seeing even half of what the system can do, while Diamond upgrades sit much further down the road. That makes the early sessions feel a bit limited compared to what the game eventually becomes.

I also ended up liking the presentation more than expected. Vampire romance still does very little for me, although the weird amount of lore, good visuals, and especially the bonus OST gave Assembl'Em some personality. Overall, this is one of the more interesting Immortal Romance releases I have played, especially once the Card system starts opening up.
