Deadcode Review

Picture a world where 5 megacorporations have seized control of all online digital life, creating bots based on stolen data that all but replace humans. In these AI times, this is not all that hard to imagine, and ELK brings this dystopian vision to life in their latest slot release, simply called Deadcode. Luckily, cyberpunk freedom hackers are fighting back, erasing their stolen identities to escape the matrix. Now, you get to join them in this epic battle that will forever shape the future of humanity.

You start by choosing your preferred bet level, ranging from €0.20 to €100 per spin. You can choose to play with turbo mode switched on or enjoy the regular spin speed. Either way, Deadcode plays out on a 5x5 grid with a cluster pay win system, meaning you win when matching symbols form vertical and/or horizontal clusters anywhere in view. You need between 3 and 5+ matching symbols in a cluster to win, and the Chinese/Japanese-looking symbols pay between 0.5x and 5x your stake for 5+ in a cluster.

Winning symbols are removed and replaced thanks to the Avalanche feature, and each consecutive avalanche win increases the global win multiplier. Wild symbols do not land organically in Deadcode but can be spawned in other ways. A 3-symbol winning cluster will spawn a wild in the empty position, and wilds can also come from the so-called Subroutine features. These are 5 reel-specific modifiers that trigger when a reel meter is filled by winning symbols, prolonging your winning streak in different ways.

In addition, a random streak respins Breach feature can trigger at the end of rounds, potentially leading to full-screen wins. The bonus round ups the ante by making the progressive win multiplier non-resetting, and the same goes for the Subroutine meters and any expansion of the grid (up to 5x7 is possible). The super bonus round also guarantees 1-5 pre-filled Subroutine meters per spin. Deadcode is a medium-to-high volatility slot game with a hit rate of 25.1%, an RTP of 94%, and a max win of 5,000x your stake.

Deadcode Features

Take a deep breath before we dive in to take a closer peek at all the features in this game. You can, of course, gain firsthand experience with these features by checking out the Deadcode free play demo at the top of this review page. Let’s get started!

Avalanche Wins & Global Multiplier

Winning symbols are removed from the grid via the Avalanche mechanic, with existing symbols dropping to their lowest possible positions before a new batch of symbols fills the remaining gaps. This process repeats as long as you keep winning, allowing for indefinite winning streaks per round. In addition, the global win multiplier increases by +1 per avalanche win, but it resets between base game rounds.

Subroutine Modifiers

Below each reel, you’ll see a Collector meter that’s linked to the reel’s unique Subroutine modifier. Winning symbols are collected by the corresponding Subroutine Collector meter or meters. During a round, filling the initial Collector requires 3 collected winning symbols, while subsequent Collector activations require 5, 7, and 10 collected winning symbols, respectively.

The Subroutine modifiers are activated one at a time when you hit a non-winning avalanche, starting from the leftmost activated Subroutine reel. Here’s an overview of the Subroutine features:

  • Mystery X - creates a set of matching symbols in an X pattern on the grid.
  • Terminate - removes 1 to 3 pay symbols while increasing the global win multiplier.
  • Upgrade - upgrades a random pay symbol type to a higher-value pay symbol.
  • Refactor - turns 3 to 5 non-winning pay symbols into special symbols (wilds, scatters, or super scatters).
  • Refresh - adds 1 row to the grid and clears the grid. If the grid is maxed out at 7 rows, it still clears the grid.

Breach

At the end of a round, the Breach feature can randomly trigger. This removes non-winning symbols and replaces them with new symbols, while winning symbols and special symbols are sticky. The Breach feature continues as long as you keep improving the initial win or form new winning clusters.

Bonus Round & Super Bonus Round

You need to land 3 scatters in view in the same round to trigger the Bonus Round, awarding 7 free spins. The global multiplier does not reset between free spins, and Collector meters and grid expansions are also persistent. You win 7 super free spins if at least one of the triggering scatters is a super scatter, and each super free spin guarantees that 1 to 5 Subroutine Collector meters are filled. During both bonus rounds, each scatter that lands awards +1 free spin before turning into a wild symbol.

X-iter Feature & Bonus Buy Menu (not UK)

Eligible players can take advantage of the X-iter feature and bonus buy menu, prominently displayed on the left. Here’s an overview of what you can purchase in the Deadcode slot:

  • Bonus Hunt - pay 2.5x your stake to increase the bonus round hit rate by 4 times.
  • Mega Hunt - pay 5x your stake to increase the bonus round hit rate by 8 times.
  • Subroutine Overload - pay 10x your stake to get 1 to 5 Subroutine features.
  • Bonus Round - pay 100x your stake to trigger the regular bonus round.
  • Super Bonus Round - pay 250x your stake to trigger the super bonus round.

Theme & Graphics

Set against a sprawling, neon-drenched metropolis, Deadcode paints a bleak picture of humanity's future with its dystopian backstory. The 5 megacorporations controlling all digital life are represented by the 5 different-colored reels, with their corresponding Subroutine symbol and meter. This gloomy cyberpunk story unfolds with futuristic aesthetics, complete with a synth-heavy electronic soundtrack. The symbols look like a blend of Chinese and Japanese letters, with a dash of neon-green Matrix symbols cascading down in the bonus round for good measure.

Deadcode Free Play

If you want to decipher this game in your own risk-free sandbox, we have the Deadcode demo game available at the top of this page. It’s admittedly an unusual experience, at least compared to regular slot games, so it’s a good idea to get first-hand experience before you decide if this is something you want to play for real. Luckily, you can take full advantage of the X-iter menu and see all the features and bonus rounds in action. After your Deadcode free play session is over, leave a comment and tell us what you think of the game.

Our Verdict

I always like when developers deliver a compelling and intriguing backstory to make the slot experience more immersive, and that’s definitely the case with Deadcode. It doesn’t need to be a long, elaborate wall of text or anything, just enough to create the right atmosphere and pique your curiosity. Corporate overlords taking over the digital world is not too far off from what is seemingly happening in our world these days, making Deadcode a highly relevant and perhaps even prophetic game.

While the futuristic, neon-soaked visuals are polished as always from ELK, it’s not really the most striking game this provider has come up with in that regard. For one, the symbols are a bit too similar for my taste, although the different colors help. Still, it feels a bit too monotonous after a while, despite the modifier action. The electronic soundtrack is decent as well, but still comes across as a tad generic, not unlike the backdrop.

It’s like the Subroutine modifiers are doing their thing, with all sorts of stuff happening to the symbols, but it feels impersonal in a way that may not appeal to everyone. Perhaps that is the point, since we are all reduced to "dead code" in the vision this game lays out, and in that regard, it serves the theme well. However, serving the theme does not necessarily translate to engaging gameplay. Don’t get me wrong, it’s enjoyable enough to take Deadcode for a spin, but it gets old a bit too quickly.

The bonus round and the super bonus round definitely lift the experience, though, as you get plenty more back-to-back modifier action. The multiplier not resetting is a classic, but it really helps that the Subroutine meters also don’t reset. Keep in mind that the features can go on for a good while without necessarily yielding massive payouts. The bonus buy prices reveal what to expect on average, and the 5,000x win cap is lower than usual from ELK. Overall, Deadcode is worth a try to see if you like it, but it’s not a game I will return to all that often.
