It seems that the angry Toro, and his Matador arch-enemy, have the ability to travel in both time and space. This is not unlike a certain Kane from ELK’s Gold series, and you get elements from both series incorporated into this Shogun era Japanese-themed slot. The Matador is dressed up as a ninja in this game, but he’s still getting his ass kicked by the bull each time they appear at the same time. The visuals are idyllic enough though, with classic Japanese architecture on display in the background.

The Toro Wild is dressed up as a samurai, and he looks fearsome with his kamikaze bandana and katana blade. You get a dynamic grid experience all the way, with up to 10 positions per reel, and the Toro Wild triggers walking wild respins when he appears. You get more wilds when he takes care of the Matador ninjas, and a progressive multiplier system is introduced in the bonus round. There are plenty of features and action all the way in Toro Shogun, and the somewhat strange mix of themes works surprisingly well once you get into the swing of things.

The premium symbols pay between 0.75 and 10 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and landing a 5-oak win activates the Pay Both Ways feature for as long as the cascading sequence lasts. Winning symbols are removed and replaced via this mechanic, and at least 1 wild symbol will spawn in an empty position per cascade.

Each winning reel expands by the number of symbols that are removed, and you can play with up to 10 symbols per reel in this game. The Max Row feature can trigger at random times, and this expands all 5 reels with 10 rows.

The Matador symbols are needed to trigger the Toro Goes Wild feature, which happens when the Toro Wild is present at the same time. You will then see the bull get angry as he moves vertically and/or horizontally to knock the Matador off the grid. Toro leaves wilds in his wake as he moves, and he will move around like this until all Matadors have been taken care of.

The Shogun Mode triggers when you have maxed out all 5 reels with 10 rows, and this removes all low-value symbols from the grid. The Pay Both Ways feature also activates, and the Shogun Mode lasts for as long as the cascading winning streak lasts.

You need 3 bonus symbols on reels 1, 3, and 5 to trigger the Bonus Round, and this gives you 7 free spins. The win multiplier increases by +1 per bonus symbol you land during the feature, and landing 2 bonus symbols increases the win multiplier by +2.

Land 3 at the same time to increment the multiplier by +3, and this also gives you +7 extra free spins. The multiplier never resets, and landing 3 bonus symbols in Shogun Mode triggers a persistent Shogun Bonus Mode for the rest of the feature.

Well, you cannot accuse ELK Studios of being unoriginal at least, as they have a remarkable ability to combine incongruent elements in a way that works like a charm. Who would’ve thought that bullfighting and classic Japanese architecture and Shogun culture would blend together so seamlessly, but here we are. The ninja matadors are as hilarious as the raging samurai Toro when he’s chasing them, and ELK has clearly also been inspired by their very own Gold/Kane series when creating this game.

The pace is excellent all the way, and getting a bunch of wilds after each cascade can certainly help keep your winning streak going. The walking Toro Wild feature triggers on a regular basis, and with matadors present things can get “wild” for a good while. Getting the persistent Shogun mode bonus round isn’t all that easy unless you are willing and eligible to pay for it, but the regular feature can lead to solid payouts as well. Up to 25,000x your stake is possible in Toro Shogun, which is hard to complain about, and fans of the Toro series, as well as newcomers, have plenty to look forward to in this game.
