Nowadays, more and more games are released with Big Time Gaming's Megaways engine, and it's getting really hard to calculate how many titles have been released using the super popular mechanic so far. Providers not only develop brand new slots but give a second life to their old games by enhancing them with the Megaways engine. Now the time has come for another iconic and one of the most influential slots to get an upgrade - Gonzo's Quest.
Back in 2011, when the original Gonzo's Quest was released, it immediately gained cult status and became one of the most beloved games among players all around the world. Many of the fans still enjoy it, as the slot continues to magnetize players and even attract new ones. However, since almost 10 years have passed since the release of the iconic NetEnt's brainchild, the devs finally decided to enliven it, and the remake is definitely promising since the collaboration of two giants of the slot industry, NetEnt, and Red Tiger, won't leave anyone disappointed, and especially considering a power-up with the Big Times Gaming's engine - Gonzo's Quest will for sure meet all players' expectations and even more.
Gonzo's Quest Megaways - Theme and Graphics
The first thing that catches your eye is that it's still the same Gonzo, though, returned to life with enhanced visuals. Luckily, the developers didn't take a different approach to the design of the game and everything remained quite familiar for those who have ever tried the original part. New Gonzo's Quest still features the prototype of charming conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro as the lead character, and the theme too did get just a visual enhancement, thus you have a new chance stay by Gonzo's side on his adventure to the Lost City of Gold to find hidden treasures of Eldorado.
Gonzo's Quest Megaways is a visual masterpiece. Though the design remained identical to the original, it was significantly upgraded in terms of graphics and details. However, we still have to pay tribute to the team, who designed the 2011's title, as even after 10 year period it only deserves a graphical upgrade and no other formidable recast concerning the overall look of the game. True to the original, the reels are set in a backdrop of a Mayan temple, though, it became slightly bigger due to the enlarged reelset. In a nutshell, the background looks superb, the temple is covered with Mayan drawings and other architectural ornaments, which contribute to creating indeed the unique and immersive atmosphere of attending the ancient civilization's shrine by yourself.
The symbols also remained similar to the older brother of Gonzo's Quest Megaways, though, they look a bit prettier thanks to the touch of styling applied. The paytable did also get a few changes with 2 new symbols added to the game, and now the collection of symbols is a set of 9 regulars, divided by 5 high pays and 4 instances of lower value. The high-paying ones are colorful stones, patterned with various Mayan masks. There is a new symbol added to the set of premiums, which is a grey stone mask with golden crown and earrings encrusted with shiny red gems. On the lower side, there are no changes to the design of the symbols, except for a new addition to the set, which is a green stone representing a man's face. In order to get a winning combination at least 3 instances of the same symbol are required, and the top payouts are provided by 6-of-a-kind combos. There is also a Wild symbol, which doesn't really noticeably differ from the one used in the original Gonzo's Quest, still being a grey circle stone with a golden question mark pattern. The Scatter didn't even get an upgrade, remaining the golden circle shield with a Mayan mask pattern.
Gonzo's Quest Megaways - Technical Details
As the title implies, the slot is powered by the Megaways engine, which randomly determines the number of symbols and betways at the beginning of each spin. The grid is a 6 reel and 2-7 row layout with varying number of paylines from 64 to 117,649.
What differs Gonzo's Quest from a pile of other Megaways-powered games is the medium-high volatility with an impressive winning potential of 21,000x of the bet. Playable from 0.1$ to 4$ per spin, the game offers a max payout of 84,000$, of course, in case you play with the highest bet option available. The betting range is actually way more narrow than other Megaways-powered slots boast, which may not appeal to a certain interlayer of players, namely high-rollers. As well as the increased number of everything, including max win and enlarged reelset, the RTP was slightly amplified in comparison to the original. Now it's a solid 95.77% (the game has RTP ranges), which is though slightly lower than the average level within the industry. In a word, Gonzo's Quest couldn't benefit any better in terms of technical data.
Bonus Features in Gonzo's Quest Megaways
When it comes to the features, Gonzo's Quest Megaways has a lot to offer and those looking for a large variety of bonuses will obviously be pleased to get to know what changes did the remake undergo.
The first one to mention is the Avalanching Wins mechanic, which was firstly introduced in the original Gonzo's Quest back in 2011. The feature triggers on every winning spin, destroying the winning symbols and replacing them with new ones. Heavy stone blocks will tumble down onto the grid to form new winning combinations, and the feature continues up to the moment when no new winning combos could be made. Avalanching Wins works really well with the Megaways engine, allowing to score multiple wins almost every round by launching a chain of consecutive winning spins.
On the top right corner of the reels, you'll notice a multiplier meter, and Avalanching Wins are strongly connected with the next feature to talk about. Every time you manage to trigger a cascade, multipliers come into play. A multiplier is applied for each new Avalanche, growing with every new consecutive win. The multipliers grow up to 4th wave of Avalanches:
- 1st Avalanche - 1x multiplier.
- 2nd Avalanche - 2x multiplier.
- 3rd Avalanche - 3x multiplier.
- 4th Avalanche - 5x multiplier.
After reaching the 4th cascade, multipliers don't grow any bigger and remain with the 5x value for every following consecutive cascade. However, multipliers are reset to their initial stance of 1x in case the winning streak is over. During the Free Spins, though, the multiplier values are significantly higher:
- 1st Avalanche - 3x multiplier
- 2nd Avalanche - 6x multiplier
- 3rd Avalanche - 9x multiplier
- 4th Avalanche - 15x multiplier
Gonzo's Quest Megaways features a brand new enhancement, which was absent in the original part. This one will make you shake and shiver by all meanings. At times an Earthquake feature may be triggered, making your screen shake and breaking to pieces all the instances of low-paying symbols in view. The feature is really handy since it can turn even the worst outcome into a chain of consecutive wins. Taking into consideration the Avalanching Wins mechanic and the multiplier trail feature, Earthquakes may be extremely lucrative and lead to really amazing prizes.
Remember the Wild question mark symbols mentioned before? This time they're called Unbreakable Wilds, and it's certainly cannot be considered as empty words since the Wilds in Gonzo's Quest are endowed with great durability. Each spin you can land up to 2 Wilds, one on the first 3 reels and one on the second 3 reels. In accordance with the above-mentioned, the Wilds do not break after participating in winning combinations and remain on the grid for a duration of the spin. Moreover, the Wilds can not only substitute regular symbols to perform winning combos, but substitute Scatters to assist trigger precious Free Spins bonus.
The last but not least feature, instead, the worthiest one is called Free Fall. It's actually a nod to the original game that the devs kept the same name of Free Spins feature. You'll need at least 3 Scatter symbols in order to activate the bonus. 3 instances of Free Fall symbols will award you with 9 free spins, and every additional special symbol to participate in triggering combination will give you 3 extra spins. As already mentioned above, during Free Spins rounds the multipliers' value is vastly increased, growing up to 15x after performing 4 Avalanches in a row.
Moreover, the feature can be retriggered during the bonus in case you're lucky enough to land some more Scatters. After the feature comes to an end, you will return to the base game, though, keeping the multiplier obtained in the free game. Furthermore, the Scatters which triggered the bonus game are destroyed as soon as you get back to the main game, thus you have a chance to continue landing winning combos.

The 200 Spins Experience
You might be interested to find out what our 200 spins experience in Gonzo's Quest Megaways was up to before starting your own spinning adventure. Before sharing the details, it's necessary to mention that every session is unique since it all depends on random as you might win or lose by a matter of chance. Even though a lot of players describe new Gonzo's Quest as a terrible and extremely uneventful game with little returns, our session was fascinating and it actually exceeded our expectations, to be honest. As already mentioned before, your experience is 99% likely to be different from ours and you may have either good or bad run.
As usual, we set our bet at 1$ per spin and enabled the autospins mode. It didn't take us a long time to land our first wins, though, not to say that we did benefit from those smaller wins, yet, it helped us stay afloat. A couple of Earthquakes helped us score +-10x wins, however, our aim was to trigger Free Spins and check out whether we can win something decent. Ironically, it happened in approximately 60 spins, and the very first Free Spin led us to a massive 691.8x Super Mega Win and retriggered the feature. We did retrigger it once more during the bonus and the total number of spins was 27. We were quite shocked as almost every spin led to a big win, and the total surplus by the end of the bonus game was 1,402.2x of the bet. One of the most, if not the most lucrative Free Spins rounds in living memory.
The game treated us well, or to be more precise, we couldn't benefit any better than this. After the session, we came up to the conclusion that Gonzo's Quest Megaways is definitely a game where your dreams of never-seen-before riches are likely to come true. And yet we wish you more luck than we had or at least the same, though, remember to play responsibly and never recklessly chase jackpots.
Gonzo's Quest Megaways - Verdict
All up, Gonzo's Quest Megaways is a superb remake of the oldie with the cult status. We still have good ol' Gonzo performing amusing dances and other recreative actions, and the visual styling remained much the same, despite being enhanced graphically, which is definitely of top-notch quality, as well as animations and sound effects. Not to say that the game has been drastically reinvented, though, the changes significantly influence the pace of the game.
The devs managed to bring not only outstanding modern graphics to their brainchild but also saturated it's gameplay with a wide variety of new special features, not even taking into consideration the huge Megaways upgrade. This version is a step up in quality and certainly takes it to a whole new level of gameplay in comparison to the original. Same to how Gonzo's Quest won everyone's heart back in 2011, the remake is guaranteed to follow the success of its predecessor. NetEnt and Red Tiger turned out to become a really nice team, which managed to deliver a new layer of entertainment to the bit outdated yet legendary slot.
It appeals even more than the original, and the new set of features involved only heats the things up. With the addition of the Megaways engine, Gonzo's Quest was given a rebirth, and the other in-game features only nailed the potential success of the remastered version. In a word, if you liked the original slot about Gonzalo's adventure, you'll wet your shorts for joy after trying the Megaways-powered adaptation.
