Gems Bonanza Review
Gems Bonanza is a cluster pays 8x8 grid slot from Pragmatic Play, and it comes with 5 different base game reel modifiers. This is a highly volatile title with an above-average 96.55 % RTP, and a 10,000x potential. The 5-tier bonus round parades out all 5 reel modifiers like pearls on a string, and each new level increases the win multiplier progressively up to 10x.
You’ll see 64 shining gemstones drop down on every spin, and you need to form matching clusters with between 5 and 25+ symbols to win. The cascading wins feature makes sure to give you plenty of new opportunities on a regular basis, and the different reel modifiers will trigger quite often. This breaks up the base game grind a lot, and makes the whole experience feel less volatile than it actually is.
The pace of the game is pleasant enough, and it’s set to a soothing synth soundtrack. You can place bets between 20p and £100 per spin across all platforms and devices, and the 5 premium gemstones pay out between 50x and 1,000x for 25+ in a cluster. Wilds cannot land organically here, but you can look forward to plenty of wilds from 2 of the 5 reel modifiers. Gems Bonanza is a highly entertaining game that also packs a solid punch, without ever feeling overly brutal or “hard to get”.
Gems Bonanza Features
On every base game spin you’ll see up to 4 different colored spots in various configurations on the wall/map behind the symbols. If you land a winning combo on top of one or more of them, you will trigger the corresponding reel modifiers:
- Blue spot (Nuclear modifier) – clears all symbols, and gives you a fresh new batch.
- Pink spot (Wild Gem) – transforms all instances of a randomly chosen symbol into wilds.
- Brown spot (Squares) – gives you identical 2x2 mega symbols randomly added to the grid.
- Red spot (Colossal Symbols) – a 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5 mega symbol is placed randomly on the grid.
- Green spot (Lucky Wilds) – gives you 5 to 15 wilds randomly placed on the grid.
You can win more than one modifier at the same time, and if that’s the case they play out in the order listed above.
On the right-hand side you’ll see a Gold Fever meter, and each tumble win fills the meter with liquid gold from the collected symbols. The meter resets on losing spins, and it takes 114 winning symbols to fill the meter. This triggers the Gold Fever Bonus Round.
The free spins feature has 5 levels, and you start at level 1. The multiplier starts at 2x for level 1, and you will now get all 5 reel modifiers in sequential order. You collect symbols also here, and filling the meter again upgrades you to the next level. You need to collect 116, 120, 125 and 130 symbols to get to level 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively.
Level 2 to 5 comes with multiplier values of 4x, 6x, 8x and 10x, and all 5 modifiers play out on each new level. The bonus round is over when all 5 modifiers have played out, and you didn’t collect the symbols needed to move to the next level. If you get to level 5, the feature is finished once the 5 modifiers have played out.
Depending on your jurisdiction, you can buy the Gold Fever progressive bonus round by paying 100x your stake. It plays out the same as it would if triggered organically, but UK players cannot go for the buy option.
The 200 Spins Gems Bonanza Experience
Grid slots are usually action packed and exciting, and we very much looked forward to seeing this massive, gemstone riddled 8x8 setup in action. We actually managed to get to the second level in the bonus round, but the rumor is that getting further than that is quite difficult. Check out all the highlights from our 200 spins test session in the video below.
Like so many grid slots, Gems Bonanza comes with this “oddly satisfying” quality that makes you feel good inside when playing. There are plenty of base game features to keep you entertained here. However, displaying the name of each feature in bold type in front of the grid every time is a bit over the top. No need for hiccups like that to break up the otherwise nice flow.
The bonus round gives you all 5 features in a row, which is kind of neat, but getting above level 2 is not that easy. Even at that level you can still land solid payouts though, and the 10,000x potential is very solid even for a highly volatile game. There might not be anything brand new to see here. However, all the moving parts have been arranged together in a unique and effective way, which makes for a very decent grid slot experience.
- 5 different reel modifiers
- 5-tier bonus round where all 5 modifiers play out sequentially
- High volatility and 10,000x max win potential
- Hard to get passed level 2 in the bonus round
