John Hunter is back with another ancient Egypt ‘Book slot’ adventure, and Book of the Fallen is a highly interesting installment in the ever-popular ’Book mechanic genre. This is hardly due to the somewhat standard visual presentation however, although Book purists will probably be pleased with that too. What makes this release stand out is basically 2 things; the main thing being your ability to choose your own Expanding Symbol freely.

This is not something you see too much of out there, although being able to reject the randomly selected Expanding Symbol has been done before. It makes a big difference, as you can play it super volatile by always going for the Explorer, or mix it up with safer options. The other novelty is the Super Spin Ante Bet feature. Essentially, it allows you to pay extra for individual bonus round spins in the base game, instead of purchasing the whole feature (which is also possible for non-UK players).

The Book symbols serve double duty as both the Wild and the Scatter, as is usually the case. As a wild, the Book steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combinations. It also pays 2, 20 and 200 x your stake for 5-oak wins, while regular premiums award between 75 and 500 x your stake for the same.

You trigger the Bonus Round when 3+ book scatters land anywhere in view, and this awards 10 free spins. The book then opens up, and you get to pick and choose your preferred Special Expanding Symbol for the feature. The higher the value of the symbol, the more volatile your feature becomes, and the expanding symbols pay from any position just as long as you land enough instances of it.

The Super Spin Ante Bet feature makes this ‘book slot’ stick out even more, as it allows you to pay 10x your regular bet size to get nothing but ‘Book of’ mechanic spins. While Pragmatic Play’s Book of the Fallen does nothing to revolutionize the ancient Egypt visuals that so many ‘Book slots’ come with, a quick glance under the hood should make any Book connoisseur interested. Being able to choose your own Special Expanding Symbol is a gamechanger, although it has been done before in Playson’s mostly forgotten Book of Gold: Symbol Choice.

We have a feeling Book of the Fallen will fare better than Playson’s effort though, not only due to a better visual presentation, but also because of the Super Spin Ante Bet feature. This allows you to try your luck with a chosen expanding symbol at any time, but we’re unsure how the UK Gambling Commission will view this recent Pragmatic innovation. The 1 in 2,118,644 max win chance is another reason to give this one attention, and Book of the Fallen should be highly interesting for all book fans out there.
