Mysterious Egypt slot review
Mysterious Egypt is definitely a step forward for Pragmatic Play’s venture into the “Book of” saga. Their last release in this overcrowded genre, Book of Vikings, was a pure clone offering a slightly improved math model. Their latest effort however, comes with a few twists to the standard formula. Tectonic plates are not exactly shifting here, but at least they’ve made an honest attempt to be somewhat original.
The base game comes with a randomly chosen Expanding symbol, and you get 2 expanding symbols in the bonus round. That pretty much sums up what this game is all about, and you will also benefit from a decent standard RTP of 96.5 % (beware of RTP ranges, however), and a potential that’s slightly higher than usual 5,000x. Visually, the game is unimpressive however, with a very generic and dated-looking version of the standard Egypt theme.

Mysterious Egypt slot Features
Each base game spin comes with a randomly chosen Mystery Symbol in a carousel box above the reels. All the regular pay symbols can be chosen, and the chosen symbol will expand if you land enough of it to trigger a win. In practice, this means at least 2 matching premium symbols, or 3+ matching royal symbols.
The Mystery Symbol will expand to cover the full reel, and it doesn’t matter where the symbols land, just as long as you have enough to create a winning combination. This is typical for the book slot mechanic in the bonus round, but here you also get it during base game play.
The Book symbol is usually the scatter/wild, but in this game it’s been replaced by an Egyptian Queen symbol. It still steps in for all regular symbols to help you form winning combos though, and it pays up to 200x your stake for 5 on a payline. Keep in mind that the wild cannot step in for expanded symbols.
Landing at least 3 scatter/wilds triggers the bonus round, and you will be awarded with 10 free spins no matter how many scatters you landed. Usually, you will get 1 special symbol chosen in the bonus round, but in Mysterious Egypt you get 2. These special symbols will expand just like in the base game, which can lead to bigger payouts where both symbols take turns to expand.
You can retrigger the free spins round by landing 3+ scatters anywhere on the same free spin. This gives you 10 new spins, but the chosen special symbols will remain the same. There is no limit to how many spins you can get this way. Finally, non-UK players can purchase the bonus round with 10 free spins for 100x your stake.
The 200 Spins Mysterious Egypt slot Experience
We grinded along in the base game, but without much luck. We therefore caved after a while, and decided to go for the Bonus Buy option. You can skip to 1 minute into the highlights video if you want to see how the free spins feature plays out. We landed a pretty solid “double” expanding symbols win towards the end, which is well worth a peak.
Just like numerous projects have been launched as an “improved Bitcoin”, so countless developers have tried to improve upon Book of Dead. In either case, the “original” seems to prevail unaffected (yes, we know Dead is a Ra clone, but you catch our drift). With Mysterious Egypt, Pragmatic Play is at least trying to improve the features, instead of just making a clone with slightly better stats, like they did with Book of Vikings.
The Expanding Mystery symbol in the base game can, in theory, lead to payouts up to 5,000x your stake. This feature makes it less of a grind, and the bonus buy option (not for UK players) is also a nice touch. Having 2 chosen symbols in the bonus round is also kind of neat, as they will take turns expanding if you land enough of both on the same spin. Will Mysterious Egypt, with its “improved” math model and features, be the one to finally dethrone Book of Dead? We hardly think so, but it’s a decent alternative just the same.
- Randomly chosen expanding symbol in the base game
- Bonus round with 2 chosen expanding symbols
- The 5,533x potential is a bit above the 5,000x “norm”
- Bonus buy option for non-UK players (pricetag: 100x)
- Visually generic, with the standard ancient egypt theme

At the time of writing, you will find a total of 166 book of slots in our catalog. We will recommend some of the more interesting ones below.
Book of Vikings - is included here mostly because we mentioned it above, and because it’s another “Book of” clone from Pragmatic Play. It stays very true to the source of inspiration, albeit with a higher default RTP of 96.5 %. It also comes with a 5,500x potential, which is a bit higher than most book slots.
Age of the Gods Norse: Book of Dwarves - is a merger of Playtech’s famous jackpot series with the book of saga. It plays out on a 5x5 grid with 50 win ways, and the bonus round comes with 3x3 expanding symbols. This is pretty far from the original recipe, but the game has been pretty successful so far.
Ali Baba's Luck - is somewhat similar to the game at hand. Winning symbols get highlighted on a meter, and will then be chosen expanding symbols on the next spin. This feature does not reset in the bonus round, which can give you plenty of expanding symbol action for payouts up to 5,362x.
