Popiplay teleports you right into the zombie apocalypse in their Wild Zombies slot, but it’s done with a healthy dose of humor that balances out the horror aspect of the brain-hungry creatures. The "fresh brains" neon sign flickering in the background sets the tone, together with the ominous ambience of the understated soundtrack. The grid is framed by rusted industrial piping, showcasing symbols like spooky teddy bears, chainsaws, and jerrycans, as well as male and female zombie hunters armed with baseball bats and guns. Each of the main features comes with unique settings, one more disturbing than the other.

Pros and Cons of Wild Zombies

Our Verdict

Wild Zombies immediately reminded me of PearFiction’s hilarious Granny vs Zombies, probably due to the humorous take on the grotesque subject matter and the fact that one of the zombie hunter characters looks like a grandpa. The cartoonish presentation is kind of similar as well, but the eerie soundtrack adds a more serious undertone of gloom that should appeal to horror fans.

It seems the two zombie hunters have set up a trap for the walking dead, offering a “fresh brains” shop where they can box in the undead creatures with barbed wire fences to hopefully get rid of them for good. Popiplay cleverly tells this story from the visuals alone, which adds narrative depth to the experience. The game itself feels a bit like a tactical survival mission too, where you have to brave the high volatility to benefit from the many features.

Wild Zombies lives up to its title, offering plenty of classic wild symbol action. The brain jar wilds can boost your wins by up to x200 per wild, and the same goes for the stacked zombie wilds. Massive payouts are possible also in the base game, in other words, and not least when you trigger the brain lab respins feature. This hold and win-style bonus is all about racking up as many multiplier brain jar wilds as possible, which can lead to solid back-to-back wins and potentially a full-grid climax.

Making the stacked zombie multiplier wilds into walking wilds when fully in view during the bonus round elevates the experience, and things definitely heat up if you get a few of these going. The super bonus is extremely hit or miss, though, as a lot hangs on landing stacked sticky/walking wilds as early as possible. While relying mostly on tried and tested features, Popiplay has still managed to make Wild Zombies feel as fresh as the brains on offer. I believe many players will return for a second helping, myself included.
