Super Cherry 5000 Review

This isn't Greentube's first Super Cherry game. Super Cherry 1000 and Super Cherry 2000 were already around when Super Cherry 5000 was added in October 2024. Super Cherry Lock'N'Win is also part of the series, though the 5000 version stays with the old fruit machine setup.

There's not much happening on the reels themselves. You get three of them, with wins counted only across the middle row. The symbols are mostly fruit – cherries, lemons, oranges, pears, plums, grapes and watermelons – with BARs, bells and stars mixed in. Wins are easy to follow because everything happens on that middle line. I actually found myself paying more attention to individual spins here than I normally would with a slot that has dozens of paylines.

There is more to Super Cherry 5000 than matching three fruit symbols, though. Hold and Step can come into play when two matching symbols land, and there is a separate Cherry Step as well. The stars are what I was waiting for most of the time. Get three and the Star Feature starts, with several possible outcomes such as Shuffle, Fruit Stop, Cherry Collect or Cherry Pot.

RTP is 94.07%, so this isn't one of Greentube's more generous games on paper. Volatility is high and the top prize reaches 5,000x the stake. With only one payline, there can be quiet stretches between anything interesting happening, especially if the smaller features aren't showing up. On the other hand, Hold and Step mean I wouldn't immediately write off every spin that stops one symbol short.

For a 3-reel slot, Super Cherry 5000 has more going on than I expected. Some features can appear during regular spins, while the bigger ones come from the three Star symbols.

Hold and Step

When two matching symbols stop on the payline, the game can randomly choose between Hold and Step. With Hold, those two symbols stay where they are and the third reel gets another spin. You still need the missing symbol to land, so a win isn't guaranteed.

Step works differently. Instead of another full spin, the reel with the odd symbol moves forward one position at a time until it completes a winning combination. I found this one more satisfying to see because once it starts, you know there is a payout coming.

Cherry Step

Cherry Step can take over while the regular Step feature is running. If a Cherry appears on the third reel, the game switches to Cherry Step and works towards a winning line of three Cherries.

There is one exception here. Cherry Step doesn't activate when the two matching symbols that originally triggered Step are BARs or Bells.

Star Feature

Three Stars anywhere on the 3x3 grid trigger the Star Feature; they don't all need to sit on the middle payline. If they do land together on that line, there is also a 100x win.

There are five possible outcomes once the Star Feature starts. Two of them are 2x Shuffle and 4x Shuffle. The first gives you two respins and the second gives you four, with each respin producing a win. Fruit Stop starts another spin and then selects one of the nine symbols showing on the screen, which is turned into a winning combination. The other two possibilities are Cherry Pot and Cherry Collect.

I like the way this works because you don't know what the three Stars have actually given you until the game makes its choice. Cherry Collect was certainly the outcome I wanted to see most, since that's where the 5,000x top win becomes possible.

Cherry Pot

The Cherry Pot is always building in the background. Every Cherry visible on the screen adds 1/20 of the current bet to it, whether that Cherry is sitting on the payline or somewhere else on the reels.

The accumulated amount is displayed above the reels and keeps growing until Cherry Pot is selected through the Star Feature. At that point, the amount collected in the pot is paid out. This feature is specific to Super Cherry 5000; the 1000 and 2000 versions use a different bonus in its place.

Cherry Collect

Cherry Collect is the feature with the biggest potential. It gives you either 7, 10 or 15 steps, with the reels moving forward by one position on each step. What matters here is how many Cherries reach the payline before those steps run out.

Each collected Cherry moves you further through the multiplier values. They start at 5x, followed by 10x, another 10x and 100x, with the final Cherry taking the payout all the way to 5,000x. You need five Cherries on the payline during the feature to reach that last value.

Gamble Features

After a win, you can use the Gamble Feature rather than collect immediately. Gamble 2x is the straightforward option, where you can try to double the payout.

Gamble Mystery can instead apply a random multiplier, including 0x, so the whole amount can still disappear. Gamble Split is useful if you don't want to put everything on the line, as it lets you gamble only part of the win. I wouldn't call these the main attraction of the game, but they fit the old-school fruit machine style very well.

Theme & Graphics

Greentube hasn't done anything unusual with the fruit theme here. Cherries take centre stage, with lemons, oranges, grapes, plums and watermelons appearing alongside them. BARs and bells add even more of that classic slot feel. I wouldn't come here for impressive graphics, but I don't think the game needs them either.

The design around the reels is fairly plain, with the Cherry Pot sitting above them and the different controls below. There isn't much animation during normal spins, and the symbols themselves are bright and easy to tell apart. The Star Feature adds a little more movement when it appears, but visually the game never strays far from its retro fruit machine style.

The audio is just as simple. Super Cherry 5000 uses short electronic sounds and jingles rather than filling every spin with background music. For me, that works better here. A modern soundtrack would feel slightly out of place next to the old-fashioned reels and fruit symbols.

Our Verdict

Super Cherry 5000 turned out to be a little more interesting than I expected from a slot with 3 reels and one payline. The first few spins are very straightforward, but Hold, Step and Cherry Step give you something to watch for even when you don't land a regular win.

Cherry Collect was the feature I wanted to trigger most, mainly because that's where the 5,000x potential comes from. I also liked having the Cherry Pot building in the background, as it gives the cherries outside the payline some purpose.

There are a couple of things I wasn't as keen on. The 94.07% RTP is low, and one payline won't suit everyone. Spins can feel uneventful when none of the extra features appear, while the graphics are deliberately basic. If you prefer modern slots with large grids, cascades and frequent bonus action, there isn't much of that here.

For me, Super Cherry 5000 works best as an old-school fruit slot with a few extra ideas. I wouldn't pick it for the 94.07% RTP, but Hold, Step, the Star bonuses and Cherry Pot give the basic setup more depth than I expected.
