Monster Quest (Big Time Gaming) Review
High fantasy usually needs only three things: a sword, unrealistic armor, and a queue of orcs, gobbos, and dragons waiting to be deleted. I usually lean toward dark fantasy, because ruined kingdoms and protagonists with zero chance of happiness speak to me more.
Still, Monster Quest slot by Big Time Gaming goes for a more classic monster-hunting setup. This time, we are leaving grim misery at the door and heading into a high fantasy hunt filled with beasts, gems, and Big Time Gaming mechanics.
The base gameplay revolves around a 6-reel Megaways core. The number of symbols per reel changes every spin, and at the top setup, Monster Quest reaches up to 117,649 betways.
Wilds do what they usually do: substitute for regular paying symbols. Wins are paid from left to right, and the paytable looks like this:
| Symbol | xTotalBet for 2 | xTotalBet for 3 | xTotalBet for 4 | xTotalBet for 5 | xTotalBet for 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Purple Crystal | 2x | 3x | 5x | 10x | 20x |
| Red Crystal | - | 0.40x | 0.60x | 0.80x | 2.50x |
| Blue Crystal | - | 0.30x | 0.50x | 0.60x | 1x |
| Green Crystal | - | 0.30x | 0.50x | 0.60x | 1x |
| A | - | 0.20x | 0.40x | 0.50x | 0.60x |
| K | - | 0.20x | 0.40x | 0.50x | 0.60x |
| Q | - | 0.20x | 0.30x | 0.40x | 0.50x |
| J | - | 0.20x | 0.30x | 0.40x | 0.50x |
| 10 | - | 0.10x | 0.20x | 0.30x | 0.40x |
| 9 | - | 0.10x | 0.20x | 0.30x | 0.40x |
On the math side, Monster Quest is a weird one. The bet range runs from €0.10 to €10 per spin, with possible platform-level changes. So, no high-roller shenanigans here.
The volatility is High, so dry periods are part of the package. The listed max win is x99,900, which looks almost unreal at first glance. Technically, the number is there, but the real context sits in one of the main features, so we will return to it a bit later.
RTP also changes by casino version. Monster Quest can run at 86.35%, 91.41%, 94.41%, or 96.49%.

Monster Quest Slot Features
Monster Quest builds its bonus system around one main idea: the Knight needs to grow strong enough to deal with the Monsters on the grid. Monsters carry values, the Knight collects them after a successful slay, and the Dragon sits above the whole thing as the biggest target of the hunt.
Hold and Spin
At its core, Hold and Spin follows a Hold n Win-style respin format, but with the Knight deciding which values can actually be taken. The round starts when 6 or more bonus symbols appear. These symbols can show the Knight, Monsters, or the Dragon.
After the trigger, positions on the grid keep spinning and can land blanks or new Monsters. The Knight starts with 3 lives. A spin with no defeated Monster costs one life, while a successful slay adds the Monster value to the Knight and gives one life back, up to the 3-life limit.
The value check is the main catch here. The Knight can only defeat Monsters with the same or lower value, so the round often turns into a small ladder climb: take weaker Monsters first, then reach bigger targets later. The feature stops when the Knight loses all lives, when Monsters fill the whole grid, or when the Dragon goes down. After that, the final Knight value is paid.

Free Spins
3 or more Scatters open the Free Spins round with 12 spins, plus 2 extra spins for each additional Scatter. From that point, the Knight stays on the grid until the bonus ends, starting with a random value between 8x and 15x the stake.
The Knight can slay any Monster with a lower or equal value. Each successful slay adds that Monster value to the Knight, so the bonus can gradually build from smaller targets into stronger ones.
Regular symbol wins have a separate Megaways Win Multiplier. It starts at x1 and gains +1 for every Monster slain during Free Spins. This multiplier applies only to regular symbol wins.
If 5 or more Monsters appear at once, the game launches Hold and Spin inside the Free Spins round. The Knight still collects Monster values there, but those slays do not increase the Megaways Win Multiplier.
3 or more Scatters in any position award 4 extra Free Spins, plus 2 more for each additional Scatter. At the end of the feature, the Knight's final collected value is awarded once.
Power Play
Power Play is the bonus bet option in Monster Quest. When active, it guarantees at least 10,000 Megaways on every paid spin. The price is also heavy, since the spin cost becomes 8x the selected bet.
This option makes the base game more aggressive, but it also burns through the balance much faster. So, it is more about chasing bigger reel setups than casually testing the slot.
Bonus Buy
Monster Quest also has 2 Bonus Buy options for direct access to the main bonus rounds. The Hold and Spin Buy costs 35x the bet, while the Free Spins Buy costs 90x the bet.
As usual, Bonus Buy availability depends on the casino and local rules. Some platforms may disable this option completely, even if the base game is available.
Theme and Graphics
Monster Quest goes for classic high fantasy: castle towers, green hills, shiny crystals, shields, and a Knight ready to deal with the local monster population. Visually, though, I can’t say the game gave me much to remember. The backdrop is a standard castle view, and the symbol set does not bring many interesting fantasy details beyond the usual gems and card royals.
The best visual idea here is the reel setup. Big Time Gaming made the grid look like a castle wall, with symbols placed inside stone blocks. That part works well and gives the Megaways layout a nice thematic frame. The shields also look decent, especially when they cover bigger reel spaces.
Outside of that, Monster Quest feels fairly modest. Animations are fine, but nothing really pushes the theme forward. The sound side is weaker: the soundtrack goes for an old fantasy MIDI mood, which may sound nostalgic for a few seconds, but it quickly becomes grating. Overall, the presentation is passable, with one good reel design idea carrying most of the visual identity.
Pros and Cons of Monster Quest Slot
Pros
- Knight mechanic gives Hold and Spin more personality than a basic respin bonus
- Free Spins combine value collection with a separate Megaways Win Multiplier
- Power Play and Bonus Buy options give more control over feature access
Cons
- Lower RTP versions are very rough, especially the 86.35% setup
- Many Monster values feel too high for the Knight to collect in realistic bonus rounds
- Visual and sound design feel weaker than many other current releases
Monster Quest Free Play
Monster Quest is exactly the kind of slot I would test in demo first. You can launch the Monster Quest demo here on SlotCatalog without registration or deposits, then play with the 6-reel Megaways setup, Power Play, and both bonus rounds without feeding real money into a very hungry Knight.
The free play version is useful because the feature logic needs a few rounds to click. Hold and Spin is basically a Hold n Win with a Knight value check, while Free Spins add a separate Megaways Win Multiplier on top. The demo lets you see how often the Knight can actually collect Monster values, how the Dragon fits into the bonus, and whether the 8x Power Play cost feels justified for your style of play.
Final Words
Monster Quest is a working slot, but my impression is mixed. The base Megaways gameplay is familiar, and the Free Spins multiplier also follows a formula we have seen many times before. The main reason to play this Big Time Gaming release is the Monster mechanic.
On paper, this idea looks good: a collector-style feature with a Knight who grows by defeating Monsters. In practice, the kingdom clearly did not like this particular hero, because it feels like a D-Class warrior was sent on an S+ monster hunt. The Knight can slay only Monsters with lower or equal values, so gobbos and kobolds are realistic targets, while orcs and dragons with values in the thousands often look like decorative threats.
This is where Monster Quest becomes less pleasant for me. Seeing huge Monster values fill the grid should feel tempting, but most of them sit far above what the Knight can realistically collect during a regular bonus round. That is also why the x99,900 max win comes with a huge nuance. The number exists, but the actual road to it feels buried under very specific conditions.
Overall, Monster Quest has a good mechanical idea and a weaker execution. I like the concept of a fantasy monster hunt tied to value collection, but the balance of those values makes the feature feel more frustrating than satisfying too often.
