When I first laid eyes on Hacker’s Haven slot, I was sure Degen Studios was another Hacksaw partner due to the similar interface. However, it turns out that this debut is released under Yggdrasil’s YGG Masters program. The floor is filled with old pizza boxes, empty soda cans, and scattered documents, and our geeky cyberpunk friend is routinely waving away flies without taking his eyes away from the old-school CRT monitor in front of him. A similar monitor also frames the reels, where you’ll land iconic symbols like hard drives, memory sticks, inbox notifications, and the Bitcoin symbol. You can hear the noise of the hacker’s cat over the tense soundtrack, with the unkempt surroundings perfectly capturing the theme of a relentless digital pursuit.

Pros and Cons of Hacker's Haven

Our Verdict

There’s no doubt that Hacker’s Haven is a solid debut release from Degen Studios, but it still feels a bit like the result of Hacksaw and Nolimit City having a one-night stand. For the record, neither of these highly popular studios had anything to do with this release, other than as fairly obvious sources of inspiration. We certainly need more unconventional slots, though, and I like the swagger and guts Degen demonstrates. Only time will tell if they’ll be able to give NoLimit City a run for their money in terms of controversial and heavy-hitting games.

They have the right attitude, at least, with slogans like “We’re not here for the Karens. Our slots hit different. Our slots hit hard.” on their website. For a debut game, Hacker’s Haven wisely offers an unorthodox theme without going so far as to alienate anyone. Many players can probably recognize themselves in this hacker character, completely lost in the screen and pulling an all-nighter without even caring about the messy surroundings. We’ve all been there and done that at some point, and this game is bound to evoke nostalgia in more than one way.

Just like Hacksaw slots are known for, Hacker's Haven is a slot game that leans on simple, yet effective, features that can deliver massive wins out of the blue. Expanding multiplier wilds are hardly an innovation, but they can certainly do damage in all stages of the game. Even more so when combining forces or when they become sticky for a respin. This creates a tension that helps keep the base game interesting, with virus wilds exploding symbols to help you out when not part of a win.

I also like that there are multiple ways to trigger the bonus rounds, either via scatters or the random hacker event. A bit more transparency when it comes to bonus round hit rates (with or without the ante bet active) would’ve been appreciated, though, as it’s nice to know what you’re paying extra for. A super bonus round combining the best features could’ve been a good idea too, or at least the possibility of upgrading to the next FS level. Anyway, Hacker’s Haven slot is definitely worth checking out, and it will be fun to see what Degen delivers in the future.
