Nolimit City once again flushes subtlety down the drain with the release of Golden Shower, an unapologetic and humorous slot game set in a dingy, grime-streaked motel bathroom. While the equally “piss-centric” Punk Rocker took urinals to a whole new level of fun, Golden Shower is apparently about what it feels like to take a shower - or even a bath - when the water is yellow. At least that’s what we got out of the big win story.

Special Symbols

• Steam - picks a random symbol type and turns all instances into a higher-value symbol, including itself.
• Floater - will only activate on non-winning spins with no wild symbols present. It then picks a random symbol type, removes all other symbols except scatters and Drain symbols. An x2 multiplier is added to the positions with symbols removed, or the existing multiplier is doubled.

The Gold Spins Bonus Round triggers from landing 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols on the same base game spin, or within the same cascading sequence. This awards 6, 8, or 10 free spins, respectively, and the bonus round level is determined by the number of scatters you land initially. Theme & Graphics

The theme of Golden Shower is actually not quite as nasty as it may sound, although the big win story probes into rather crude territory. The game takes you into a worn-down bathroom, presumably at some cheap motel in the middle of nowhere. The yellow tiles set the tone, and the grid is filled with enough soap, shampoo, and rubber ducks to keep you busy for a while. Dropping the soap is a big no-no, even though you seem to be alone in this place, and if you see a bathtub full of urine, it means you’ve won big.

Pros and Cons of Golden Shower

Our Verdict

Nolimit City has never been one to shy away from the gutter, and Golden Shower proves they are still happy to plunge headfirst into the porcelain bowl of provocation. However, I can’t help but feel that this game is more gimmick than substance. It’s as if they resorted to toilet humor just to keep their controversial image going. Feature-wise, it’s solid as usual, but we have seen similar things in Duck Hunters and Duck Hunters Happy Hour already.

I hardly think NoLimit City is running out of ideas, but after years of doing their thing better than most, you can’t blame them for delivering a quasi-reskin job once in a while. Many developers wallow in reskins, copycats, and remakes, after all, and Golden Shower does offer some brand new features and tweaks. The position multipliers are not in the same league as those of the predecessors, though, which may deter some players. However, most of all, it’s the theme and visuals that you’ll either love or loathe, which can also depend on your mood.

The theme is undeniably “taking the piss” of something, but the satire feels about as muddy as the water circling the drain after you’ve had your Golden Shower. The ‘drop the soap’ pun was fun when first introduced in the big win story of San Quentin xWays, but it feels a bit used up and out of place here, not least since you’re presumably alone in a motel bathroom. In Kenneth Must Die, the satire was sharp, focused, and biting, and the comparison underscores the sense that Golden Shower is a somewhat desperate attempt at being edgy.

Building position multipliers is still pretty entertaining, though, and the 3 special symbols can lead to interesting situations. They add a new layer of depth, and not least in the bonus rounds. However, it can be frustrating when you finally trigger the 10 gold spins bonus, only to never actually land the Drain symbol that’s now guaranteed to max out the position multipliers. Whether Golden Shower sinks or floats is largely dependent on players getting past the initial “ick” factor, but if you do, there is some good fun to be had here.
