In Smartsoft Gaming’s Cheesy Road, your poor rodent avatar is trapped on a square island filled with cheese prizes and traps. The sun-drenched, lush island looks idyllic enough at first glance, but as soon as you start moving around, you will quickly learn about the dangers you face in this instant-win game. It’s basically a mashup of the regular road-crossing crash mechanic and the classic minesweeper concept, offering the freedom to blaze your own trail.

You start by choosing your bet level, ranging from €0.10 to €1,000 per round in Cheesy Road, which should satisfy most types of players. Next, you can decide to play in the default mode or switch to turbo mode via the blue button with a yellow lightning bolt icon. The pace of the game is fast enough without the turbo mode switched on, at least in my opinion. You can also choose between day mode (default) and night mode, which turns the ocean and backdrop dark blue to increase the focus on the game area.

There is plenty of cheese to go around, but each treat is hidden in a trap of some kind. The square island looks idyllic enough at first sight, surrounded by azure ocean as it is, but each step may send your mouse to kingdom come. You can get stuck in claw traps, get lost in cardboard boxes, get fried by exposed wires, or walk into a good old-fashioned mousetrap. At the end of the road is the 10,000x cheese prize, with an anvil hanging over it.

Smartsoft Gaming is no stranger to the non-traditional instant wins genre, and Cheesy Road feels like another attempt to bridge the gap between casual mobile gaming and high-stakes gambling. Players tired of the same old minesweeper-inspired releases will probably find this rodent adventure to be refreshing, but the math model underneath the polished facade is similar. Still, Cheesy Road is an innovative release overall and well worth a closer look if you like these types of games.

Unlike most mining games, you don’t choose your volatility level upfront. Instead, you get 3 choices per step, each with a higher prize than the next, tied to the volatility level of the choice. This is an interesting and innovative feature, allowing you to consciously choose instead of wildly guessing like in most similar games. You’re not worried about revealing a bomb in Cheesy Road, though, and part of the entertainment of this game is all the different traps you can walk into.

You should know that if you follow the lowest volatility path, which takes you straight to the next corner of the island, you will only get one choice from that point forward. This is because all roads lead to the 10,000x max win cheese prize in the corner opposite to where you start. The same goes if you follow the golden middle way path to the top corner of the island. Going to the low volatility corner only nets you 2x your stake, while the medium volatility corner is worth 100x your stake.

The prizes you can win increase significantly as you close in on the top prize, and it’s only too bad that the winning chances of each step are not revealed. The 97% RTP is pretty solid, though, and well above the industry average. The main issue I have with these types of games is not resolved, however, and that is the fact that I get tired of losing all the time. The temptation to take just one more step always wins, and you end up in a trap. Cheesy Road, like most instant win titles, is not a game you play to win big. You either feel entertained by losing almost all the time, or you don’t.
