On a long enough timeline, everything and his grandmother will be pitted against zombies in the crazy world of online slots. In fact, we just reviewed Granny Vs Zombies the other day, and now StakeLogic has pitted the ancient warriors of Sparta against a horde of undead in Spartans vs Zombies. These fierce warriors seem up to the task to say the least, and it all plays out on a 5x3 grid with StakeLogic’s MultiPays system active at all times.

MultiPays means that you win extra when you land 4 and 5 of a kind wins, since each combo pays independently. The base game does not come with all that many extras or features though, but you get wild symbols on all 5 reels. Premium symbols are collected to eventually trigger the Spartan or Zombie bonus round, and you can also trigger the main attraction by landing 3 scatters. Wilds play a central part in both features in different ways, and the 7,500x potential makes this a decent installment in the horror/zombie genre.

You need 3 to 5 matching symbols on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel towards the right to win, and the premium symbols pay between 5.5 and 15 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins. The MultiPays system is somewhat unusual compared to most slots, and it means that you get paid for 3 of a kind first, then 4 of a kind, and 5 of a kind separately if you land a 5-oak win. Simply put, you win more for a 4 or 5 of a kind win than you would normally do.

Wilds play a central part in this game as well, and the regular Wild symbol can appear on all reels to step in for pay symbols to help complete and/or improve wins. The Wild is also the highest paying symbol in the game, awarding 15x your stake should you land 5 wilds on the same payline.

There are 2 different Bonus Rounds in this game, one dedicated to the Spartans and one to the Zombies. The traditional way of triggering the bonus round is landing 3 scatters, and these can appear on reels 1, 3, and 5 only. Which of the 2 bonus rounds you get is determined by who wins the battle; the Spartans or the Zombies.

You can also trigger both bonus rounds via their Meters. Zombie symbols and Spartan symbols are collected in their respective meters as you play, and this sets the number of hearts to 3. One heart is lost per spin that follows, and points are only added to the respective bonus round meters when the heart meter is full.

You get 10 free spins when the Spartan Bonus Round triggers, and it comes with an x2 win multiplier for starters. You get 2 shield picks up front as well, and this can add to the win multiplier or increase your number of free spins by up to +5 per pick. Up to all 3 middle reels can turn wild on random free spins during this bonus round, and you get +1 extra spin per scatter that lands.

You get 10 free spins in the Zombie Bonus Round as well, and you get +1 extra spin per scatter that lands during the feature. You can get up to 2 wilds added to random positions on any given spin, and all wilds that appear this way become sticky for the duration of the feature. If 2 wilds are added, the second one gets a multiplier of x2 to x10 attached, and multiplier wilds boost all wins they partake in. If more than one multiplier wild is part of the same win, the multipliers are added together before being applied.

The Bonus Buy feature is available in some jurisdictions, but not in the UK for sure. If eligible, you can purchase the Spartan Bonus Round for 100x the stake, or the Zombie Bonus Round for 200x the stake.

Review Summary

If any group of warriors could take on the undead without flinching it would be the Spartans, so in a way this theme makes perfect sense. It will probably be off-putting to some players anyhow, but zombie fans might enjoy what StakeLogic has come up with in Spartans vs Zombies. The MultiPays system is something we’ve seen before from this developer, but it’s still a decent and innovative way to pay extra for 4 and 5 of a kind wins. Perhaps a bit more bells and whistles to highlight such wins would be a good idea, just to make it more noticeable.

Not much else goes on in the base game though, except for occasional wild wins, so you’re basically waiting for either of the bonus rounds to trigger. The good news is that there are several avenues into the features, thanks to the symbol collection meters. The sticky wild and multiplier wild zombie round is the most expensive buy choice, and it came across as the most lucrative feature as well. The Spartan feature is less volatile though, and both come with a decent entertainment value. We don’t see a massive hit here, but Spartans vs Zombies is an okay installment for zombie fans to check out.
