We have played plenty of slots revolving around the mysterious sea-monster, Kraken, but none quite like what Pragmatic Play has conjured up this time. Sky Bounty depicts pirate krakens engaging in a cannon battle with blimp ships floating in the sky. You have to give this highly productive developer some credit for their creativity, and this game’s got features to match. It’s somewhat inspired by Push Gaming’s ‘Fat’ series, perhaps, but certainly no copycat.

The base game comes with a frame that can fill the whole grid, and it appears at random times in random sizes between 2x2 to 6x6. Wilds inside the frame expand to fill it, and more than one wild upgrades the expanded wild with a multiplier equal to the number of wilds involved. This frame is persistent in the bonus round, starting at size 2x2 and increasing per 3 scatters you collect. This can lead to payouts up to 5,000x your stake, and there is both a bonus buy and ante bet feature for eligible players.

Keeping the Ante Bet turned on will cost you 20 % extra per spin, and the benefit is more scatters added to the reel strips. This gives you a higher likelihood of triggering the bonus round, but the stats are not specified, unfortunately.

The premium symbols pay between 6 and 20 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins, and Wilds can appear anywhere to step in for pay symbols to help complete and/or improve wins. Wilds pay the same as the top-tier crossed swords symbol if you land a pure wild win.

The Random Expanding Wild Feature triggers at random times in the base game, and you will then see a 2x2 to 6x6 sized frame around random symbols on the grid. If at least 1 wild symbol is found within this frame, the wild expands to the size of the frame. If you land more than one wild inside the frame, the expanded wild is upgraded with a multiplier equal to the number of wilds within the frame.

The Bonus Round triggers from 3+ scatters in view, and this awards 6 free spins. The frame is always active in the bonus round, and it moves to a new random position per free spin. Every 3 scatter symbols you collect upgrades the frame from 2x2 to 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, and finally 6x6 in size. Each frame upgrade also awards +2 extra spins, and scatters do not appear when the frame is maxed out. You get 1, 2, or 3 pre-collected scatters if you trigger the bonus round with 4, 5, or 6 scatters, respectively, and non-UK players can buy the bonus round for 100x the stake.

Review Summary

Pirate Krakens duking it out in floating blimp ships in the sky is certainly a new one, and Sky Bounty comes with both engaging visuals and innovative features. This is definitely an above-average Pragmatic Play release, and the expanding wild system can do serious damage also in the base game. Getting a 6x6 frame fills the entire grid, and this lands you a 1,000x payout at minimum. If 5 wild symbols land within the frame, the 5,000x potential is cracked there and then.

Of course, it’s equally frustrating when you land a massive frame without a single wild within it, but that’s just the nature of this game. The bonus round frame can be hard to upgrade at times as well, and especially beyond the 2 first levels. It’s still a highly entertaining feature though, and it’s always fun to see how far you can take it each time. Sky Bounty has what it takes to become a timeless success, not unlike Fat Rabbit, and it will be interesting to see how it fares.
