The slots world is abundant with Mexican games - every year we get to see a bunch of releases celebrating the local Day of the Dead, as well as random Mexican-inspired slots pop up once in a while throughout. Pascal Gaming’s Mexicano falls somewhere in between - it’s not particularly a Halloween-time game, being released in the spring of 2023, yet there are familiar skeletons and traditional papel picado decorations, which are a distinctive trait of such type of slots, though, along with other stereotypical elements such as tacos, chili peppers, sombreros, tequila, and so on.

That pretty much tells a lot about Mexicano, at least its exteriors. The game’s visuals are bold and colorful, packed with classic Mexican symbols. In the background, we see a lovely village decorated with papel picado banners, and to the left of the reels, made up of the aforementioned icons, a skeletal mariachi chap is strumming his guitar. That one is Jose, and players are about to witness his love story unfold. The lady he’s hitting on is quite elusive, yet definitely worth it, and you’ll likely find yourself captivated by her too once she makes an appearance. Do not let Jose down though, he seems a good lad.

The Mexicano slot machine utilizes a traditional 5x3 reel setup with 20 fixed ways to play on each spin. To score a payout, you need to land at least 3 of the same symbols adjacently on the reels starting from the leftmost. Overall, Mexicano by Pascal Gaming is a solid slot that delivers an enjoyable gameplay experience. The gameplay, albeit simple, revolving mainly around the random multipliers, feels nonetheless exciting, as far as any spin can lead to a big win. Yet the main reason to draw many players is likely the progressive jackpots. The chance to walk away with one of those massive prizes keeps you engaged throughout the entire session, and it definitely gives Mexicano an edge over other slots within the crowded Mexican niche.

Still, I can’t ignore the fact that the theme feels lacking. While it’s beautifully crafted, with sharp vibrant visuals, there’s nothing particularly groundbreaking about it. It’s a theme we’ve seen time and time again, and savvy players might find it too familiar. Pascal Gaming’s design team, while has put a lot of effort into the presentation, hasn’t exactly gone to town with making sure the looks feel fresh and unique.

In the end, if you're a fan of Mexican-themed slots, or love the chase after progressive jackpots, Mexicano is worth a spin. It may not be the most unique game out there, but with its balanced math, decent RTP, and powerful features, it offers plenty of fun and, most importantly, a chance for massive rewards.
