It’s time for a reunion with Jean Paul, Fernando, Don Croco, Scylla, and the charming main character, Hugo, as you once again get to visit the Swedish troll and his friends living deep in the Scandinavian forest. We have seen plenty of charming and fun installments in this Play’n Go series already, and Hugo Legacy is a celebration of their success so far more than anything. It’s not really a game for “serious” gamblers, and the math model has been watered down significantly compared to the previous Huge Carts.

The game revolves around charging the Telephone Meter with winning symbols per cascading sequence, which is a system Play’n Go knows better than most developers. This is how you trigger random character modifiers to keep your winning streak going, and hopefully all the way to one of the 4 free spin levels. The bonus spin can unleash up to all 5 modifiers, as well as a wild release in the end. The 3,000x potential is a bit too low in our opinion, but Hugo Legacy is still worth checking out.

You win by landing 5 to 20+ matching symbols in a cluster anywhere on the 7x7 grid, and the premium character symbols pay 40 to 1,000 x your stake for a 20+-symbol cluster win. On the lower end, you win between 0.1 and 2.5 x your stake for 5 matching symbols in a cluster. The diamond Wild steps in for any pay symbol to help complete and/or improve cluster wins, and the Cascading Wins mechanic gives you indefinite extra wins per round as long as you keep winning.

Winning symbols are collected in the Hugo Legacy Telephone Meter seen on the right-hand side, and the meter is charged +1 per winning symbol. You are granted a character modifier when the meter reaches a certain threshold level, and you can also win a free spin with different selections of character modifiers from this meter. You need 15+ charges to get 1 of the 5 character modifiers randomly assigned:

• Hugo - spreads 5 to 8 wild symbols across the grid.
• Scylla - destroys all but 1 or 2 symbol types, while also sparing wilds.
• Don Croco - turns 2 to 5 symbols types into different symbol types.
• Fernando - turns all instances of a random symbol type into wilds.
• Jean Paul - chooses a random symbol, and creates a winning cluster.

You need at least 35 charges on the Telephone Meter to trigger a Hugo Legacy Slot Free Spin feature, and the bonus round you get is enhanced the more charges you achieve. It works as follows:

• 35 charges gives you a free spin with 2 character modifiers.
• 40 charges gives you a free spin with 3 character modifiers.
• 45 charges gives you a free spin with 4 character modifiers and 5 pre-collected wilds.
• 50 charges gives you a free spin with all 5 character modifiers and 30 pre-collected wilds.

You can choose to gamble your way up the bonus round levels up front, and losing a gamble means you get only a single character modifier for the feature. All wilds that partake in a win are collected in phase 1 of the bonus round. The wilds are then added to the grid in phase 2, after all the character modifiers have done their thing. You get no more than 5 to 10 wilds at the same time though, and this goes on until all wilds have been used.

Review Summary

We certainly enjoyed the previous installment in this charming series, Hugo Carts, and Hugo Legacy is a different beast altogether. In fact, it’s hardly a beast in comparison at all, as the math model is significantly weaker. Still, the charisma of Hugo the Troll and his animal character friends is going stronger than ever, and this is more of a lighthearted celebration of a highly successful series than anything else. As such, it works perfectly, and it utilizes a grid slot system Play’n Go is more than familiar with.

Charging the Telephone Meter is the name of the game, and you don’t need too many symbols collected to get a modifier either. Getting a decent free spin is a bit harder, of course, but we like that there are different tiers to reach for. With pre-collected wilds things can get, eh, “wild” towards the end of the spin, but up to 3,000x is still the best you can hope for in Hugo Legacy slot. The max win hit rate is 1 in 100m spins, so don’t expect to crack it all that often. This is not really a game you play for the stats, however, so it’s a take it or leave it kind of deal.
