The visual style of this game is hardly as refreshing as it was in the first Aztec Gold Megaways release, and most of the presentation has clearly been borrowed from the predecessor game. We know that iSoftBet loves the Mesoamerican jungle more than most developers, and the same can be said about the Hold&Win feature. They have countless releases with this feature as the main attraction, and Great Aztec is no exception.

You get mystery symbols in the base game, and sometimes a randomly triggered Aztec Magic feature can deliver a larger mystery symbols win. It can also trigger the Hold&Win round, which comes with prize boosters, jackpot symbols, and multipliers for both full reels and full rows. The latter was not the case for the predecessor installments, both of which are Megaways games, but the 2,500x potential is way below what you get in those, in our view, superior releases.

You can switch on the Extra Gold ante bet feature between base game spins, and this will cost you 25 % more per spin. The benefit is an unspecified “better chance of triggering the bonus round”, as scatters can land stacked. The premium symbols pay between 5 and 20 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Wild symbol steps in for pay symbols to help complete and/or improve line wins. Wilds also pay up to 25x your stake should you land 5 wilds on a payline.

Mystery Symbols can land in the base game as well, and all instances of this symbol will turn into the same randomly chosen pay symbol. The Aztec Magic feature can trigger at random times, and this gives you a big win with mystery symbols. It can also trigger the bonus round, which we will take a look at below.

The Aztec Gold Respins bonus round triggers when at least 4 sun disc scatter symbols appear on the same spin, and it’s a Hold&Win feature that gives you 3 respins for starters. If you land only 3 scatters there is a chance the 2nd Chance feature triggers. The reels with scatter symbols then become sticky, while the remaining reels respin to give you a chance of triggering the bonus round.

If the feature is triggered while there is also a Booster modifier present, all the triggering symbols are upgraded with higher cash prize values. The respins tally resets to 3 each time you land a new sun disc prize symbol during the Hold&Win round, and the sun discs become sticky together with the triggering sun discs.

If you manage to fill a whole row with sun disc scatter prize symbols, all prizes on that line are boosted by an x5 multiplier. The same happens when you fill a whole reel with sun disc scatters, except the multiplier boost is of x3. You can also land the Mini, Minor, Major, or Mega sun disc symbols, and these pay 10x, 25x, 50x, or 100x your stake, respectively.

The Aztec Bet Bonus Buy feature is available in some jurisdictions, but not in the UK for sure. If eligible, you can purchase the regular bonus round for 60x your stake, while the super version will set you back 200x your stake. The super version comes with larger sun disc prizes, and the RTP is 96.3 and 96.45 %, respectively. The feature has an organic hit rate of 1 in 200 spins.

Nothing too exciting happened for us in the base game, and we therefore decided to purchase the bonus round after a while. Review Summary

It’s a tad unorthodox to release the Megaways version of a slot before the regular non-Megaways version, but that’s exactly what iSoftBet has done with Great Aztec. Visually, the two games are very similar, and there is also an Extra Gold Megaways version to top it off. We struggle to find a compelling reason to prefer this watered down release in comparison to the two heavy hitters, and the 2,500x potential is way below what’s on offer in the dynamic grid releases.

The features are not exactly the same, but still close enough that it doesn’t make a massive difference. You get mystery symbols in the Extra Gold version as well, and it comes with higher jackpot symbols in the Hold&Win round. The only difference is the prize booster, and the fact that you get a multiplier for filling both rows and reels in this game. The 2 previous installments award a multiplier for a full reel only. The 96.28 % RTP is a bit higher though, but other than that we much prefer the Megaways versions of this game.
