Pragmatic Play falls back on the Aztec/Mayan theme quite often, as do many other developers, of course, but the backdrop in Fortunes of the Aztec still offers a nice view. You get a waterfall on the left-hand side and a classic Aztec pyramid to the right, with a 6x4 ornamented grid smack in the middle. A fully fledged Aztec warrior can appear as both a regular and full-reel Wild symbol, and especially the full reel wild can be helpful in this game.

The reason is the somewhat strange Win Multiplier system you get in Fortunes of the Aztec, as the win multiplier increases by +1 each time a reel is emptied by the Tumble Wins mechanic. It’s not as hard as it may sound to get a decent multiplier though, but still harder than with most tumble win games. Of course, the multiplier never resets in the bonus round, but it must also be increased per tumble sequence to be active. The 10,000x potential is solid at least, but we’re unsure if this multiplier system will catch on.

The premium symbols pay between 2 and 20 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins, and you win by landing matching symbols anywhere on 3+ adjacent reels from the uttermost left to the right. Wild symbols can appear on reels 3 to 6 to substitute for any pay symbol, and wilds can land in size 1x1 or 1x4. Winning symbols are removed and replaced via the Tumbling mechanic, and this process repeats as long as you keep winning.

The Win Multiplier feature kicks in when you’ve managed to clear a reel completely via the Tumble Wins feature, and it starts at x1. The win multiplier increases by +1 per cleared reel, and the total multiplier will boost your total tumble sequence win in the end. The multiplier resets to x1 between base game tumbling sequences.

The Fortunes of the Aztec Bonus Round triggers when you land 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatter symbols in view, and this gives you 12, 15, 20, or 25 free spins, respectively. Scatters appear on reels 2 to 6 only, and you win +5, +7, +10, or +12 extra spins when you land 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatters in the same free spin tumble sequence, respectively. The big difference from the base game is that the win multiplier never resets for as long as the bonus round lasts. You do need to increase the win multiplier in a tumble sequence for it to boost the total win, however.

The Bonus Buy menu is available in some jurisdictions, but not in the UK for sure. If eligible, you can pay 100x the stake to purchase the bonus round, and this gives you 3, 4, 5, or 6 triggering scatters. Taking advantage of the bonus buy option increases the top-tier RTP to 96.54 % in Fortunes of the Aztec slot, and the bonus round comes with an organic hit rate of 1 in 287 spins. Review Summary

The main selling point of this game is a somewhat strange one, as you wouldn’t think that removing full reels is easier than simply landing cascading wins, which is the regular way most progressive multipliers increase. However, the full-reel wilds tend to land quite often, and not least in the bonus round, so the multiplier was easier to increase than what we first expected. Another way of doing it would be to increase the multiplier by the number of winning symbols in the full reel, but that’s an idea Pragmatic Play can consider for the sequel.

We managed to rack up a decent x7 win multiplier in our best test session, as you can see in the video above. The feature is very hit or miss, however, and it’s frustrating when the multiplier is inactive due to not being increased. We have no complaints about the 10,000x potential however, and it comes with a decent hit rate of 1 in 6,426,735 spins. Fortunes of the Aztec admittedly comes with an unusual multiplier twist, but it’s hard to see the benefit of it (except for the novelty that wears off after a while anyway).
