There's nothing subtle about the theme. Red 7s, BARs and fruit fill a screen surrounded by flames. It looks exactly like the sort of classic slot the name suggests. The sounds don't add much beyond the usual effects when something lands, and personally, I don't think it needs more than that.

The Dollars caught my attention more than the regular symbols. Land two and they stay on the screen while everything else gets another spin. From there you're looking for another Dollar. If one arrives, the Respin continues; if it doesn't, you're done. Five Scatters bring the sequence to an end as well.

A lot of the action in Flaming Hot Extreme starts with the Dollar Scatter. It can give you a Respin before you've collected enough symbols for Free Spins, and the two features can run into each other. Jackpot Cards works on its own, while Gamble is there after eligible wins.

Free Spins

Once you have at least three Scatters, Free Spins are awarded. The number depends on how many Dollars are showing:

• 4 Scatters - 20 Free Spins
• 5 Scatters - 30 Free Spins

The same numbers apply if the Scatters come back during the bonus. Any new Free Spins are simply added to those still remaining.

Respin Feature

Jackpot Cards Mystery

Jackpot Cards doesn’t wait for a certain symbol to land. It can appear randomly after a game has ended and the resulting win has been collected. Once you're in, one of the four mystery jackpots will be awarded.

There are 12 face-down cards on the bonus screen. You turn them over until the same suit appears three times. Each suit belongs to a different level:

• Clubs – Level 1
• Diamonds – Level 2
• Hearts – Level 3
• Spades – Level 4, the highest

The size of your qualifying bet matters here. According to the game rules, betting more gives you a greater chance of entering Jackpot Cards and winning one of its levels. Even at a lower qualifying bet, however, the highest level can still be won.

Gamble

After an eligible win, you can collect the money or take it into Gamble. A card starts face down and you choose red or black. Get the colour right and you can carry on with the larger amount or stop and collect it.

A wrong pick ends the round and the amount being gambled is gone. The game also keeps the last five cards on screen as a history. Jackpot Cards prizes can't be taken into Gamble.

Theme & Graphics

Flaming Hot Extreme goes for the traditional fruit-machine look, with fruit, BARs and red 7s spread across the four-row reels. Flames frame the playing area and give the otherwise simple screen a bit more character. The symbols are large and wins are easy to pick out across the 40 lines.

There isn't much in the way of elaborate animation, which suits the pace of the game. The soundtrack stays in the background, with short effects coming in during wins and features. Jackpot Cards brings the bigger visual change, replacing the fruit reels with its screen of face-down cards.

Our Verdict

Flaming Hot Extreme surprised me a little. From the reels alone, I expected a very basic fruit game, but the Dollars make a bigger difference than I thought. Two can already start the Respin, so you don't always need to wait for a full bonus combination before something happens. Get to three or more and Free Spins follow.

I also like the way this carries into the free round. Respins are still possible there, and another group of Scatters can add 10, 20 or 30 spins. Jackpot Cards is separate from all of this and turns up on its own. Once it does, at least you know one of the four jackpot levels will be awarded.

There are things I'd change. The 95.96% RTP isn't especially high, and visually we've seen this fruit-machine style plenty of times before. Still, Flaming Hot Extreme has enough happening behind that simple screen to keep it from feeling completely basic.
