If you are familiar with Yggdrasil’s original Atlantean Gigarise, you will have a pretty good idea what to expect from partner Bulletproof Games’ Dragon Lore GigaRise. The base game is all about expanding individual reels, and when a reel is expanded beyond the 9 position capacity you get a streak respins feature with sticky full reel wilds.

The red dragon on the left-hand side flaps its wings eagerly whenever you’re closing in on a feature, and a maxed out grid awards 100 win ways. A reel multiplier system is introduced in the bonus round, and you get more full reel wilds action as well. The 19,490x potential is astronomical compared to what the original Dragon Lore offers, and this is overall a superior release that’s not without its flaws.

The symbols pay between 2 and 10 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Wild symbol pays the same as the top-tier Dragon symbol. The wild also steps in for pay symbols to help complete wins, like wilds usually do. You can also land Mystery Symbols on any reel, and these transform into a randomly chosen matching pay symbol.

Dragon Egg symbols increase the corresponding reel height randomly by +1, +2 or +3 positions, up to 9 positions in total at the most. The reels remain at the expanded positions between spins, and if a reel exceeds the maximum height you get the Super Wild Respins feature. The reel heights also increase the number of paylines up to a maximum of 100 (see display on either side of the grid).

The dragon egg reel (or reels) going above the maximum limit of 9 positions are converted to Super Wild Reels. This awards 2 respins while the super wild reels are locked in place. If you expand another reel above the 9-positions threshold on a respin, that reel also becomes a locked wild reel, and you get an additional respin. Super wild reels will reset back to 4, 5 or 6 positions in height after the feature ends, decided randomly.

You need 3, 4 or 5 bonus symbols anywhere in view to trigger the Bonus Round, and this gives you 10, 15 or 20 free spins, respectively. The feature plays out at the current grid height layout, and the dragon egg grid expansion system works the same as in the base game. The big difference is that each grid-expanding egg turns into a super wild for the current spin, and it also reveals a reel multiplier.

The reel multipliers are summed up for each reel that is part of a win, and you can reset the number of free spins back to the initial amount by landing 3+ Reset symbols in view. When the bonus round is over, you get the current reel height layout carried over back into the base game. If you trigger both the Super Wild Respins feature and the bonus round in the base game, the super wild respins round plays out first.

You can turn on the Golden Bet feature if available, and this triples your chance of the bonus round for 50 % more per spin. The Bonus Buy menu is available in some jurisdictions as well, but not in the UK for sure. It comes with 5 options ranging from 75x to 250x your stake, and each option comes with a different starting layout and between 7 and 15 free spins.

Review Summary

We want to give budding developers a fair chance, we really do, but we have to be honest at the same time. The Gigarise engine never took off after Yggdrasil’s original effort, and we hardly think Dragon Lore GigaRise is gonna change that. The animated dragon on the left-hand side looks decent, but overall the presentation comes across as too archaic.

There is a middle way between leaving players dizzy and puzzled like NoLimit City often does, and over-explaining things like the game is aimed at pensioners. The features slow down the pace too much, and it’s hard to get excited about anything that happens. Sure, this Gigarise version is far better than the original Dragon Lore, but that’s not really saying too much. The 19,490x potential is admittedly decent, but we don’t see this release going very far.
