Boom Legend (Jili Games) Game Review

Jili Games’ Boom Legend not only breaks the mold of traditional slots, but it also takes a unique approach to the shooting game format. Instead of a chaos of enemies swarming all over the place, the monsters in this game are sitting ducks floating up and down a river. You can move your cannon along the riverbank to target any of them, or use the Aim feature to target specific monsters anywhere in the game area.

The sheer amount of different characters, monsters, and creatures you’ll find in Boom Legend is impressive, and the same can be said about the size of some of the boss creatures. After choosing your preferred mode, single or multiplayer, the game starts by pointing out your cannon to you. Each bullet fired, be that rockets, axes, or hammers, equals a bet, so be sure to spend your ammo carefully and keep an eye on your bankroll.

You should also choose your bet level carefully, and know that special weapons outside of the default rockets cost up to 15x your regular stake. Loyalty is rewarded as the lightning spear meter is charged for each monster you hit, eventually unlocking a mass destruction discharge that can take down multiple monsters in one fell swoop. This lightning spear WMD is free to use once the meter is full, and the meter then resets for a new cycle.

Some of the special monsters unleash weapons, such as bombs, when defeated, targeting more monsters in the surrounding area. You can also target a mystery chest to unlock either a rocket punch or a mine weapon, in addition to the prize from the chest. The volatility of Boom Legend depends on which monsters you target most and how difficult they are to defeat. Either way, this game boasts an RTP of 97% and a max win of 888x your stake.

Special Weapons

It’s important to be aware of the different weapons you have in your arsenal, so we will provide an overview of that first. Here is a brief overview of what each weapon does, so you can make the best possible choice when you play Boom Legend:

• Rocket Cannon - is the default weapon that costs 1x your stake per rocket fired.
• Hammer - costs 15x your stake per hammer, and can trigger a lightning strike randomly that targets the monsters surrounding the main target.
• Axe - is priced at 5x your stake per axe thrown, and is more powerful than the default cannon.
• Aim - choose a specific type of monster to attack.
• Auto - allows you to target a specific monster automatically.
• Lightning Spear - has its meter charged as you defeat monsters, and when the meter is full, you can discharge this weapon to target a large area of monsters.
• Mystery Chest (Rocket Punch or Mines) - the rocket punch pushes back all monsters in its path. The mine explodes when a monster walks over it, doing damage to all monsters affected by the explosion. Defeating the chest awards 20-120x your stake.

Monsters

The regular goblin is the lowest value monster in the game, awarding 6x your stake. It’s followed by a whole array of characters, like archers, swordsmen, lancers, vikings, knights, and a red witch as the highest-value monster of the bunch. Take out the red witch to be showered with gold coins worth 40x your stake, and all the other monsters pay somewhere between 6x and 40x your stake, just to be clear.

Special Monsters, Dreadfreaks, & Bosses

There are plenty of special monsters and bosses to cover, and we will provide a brief overview here. The Goblin Bomber drops a bomb after being defeated, damaging affected monsters. Defeat Medusa to unleash her power, petrifying and damaging monsters in her vicinity. Take out the Dread Knight to make him swing his sword to damage nearby monsters. These special monsters award 70-90x, 80-100x, or 90-110x your stake, respectively.

Be on the lookout for defeated monsters returning as Dreadfreaks. You can target and defeat these Dreadfreaks to win up to 2x the award of the regular monster they started out as. Other bosses you will come across are Rock Giants, Cerberus, Golden Giants, and Ice Dragons. These pay 80x to 500x between them. The Flaming Cerberus triggers a spin on a bonus wheel, awarding 80-888x your stake.

Bonus Cyclops & Golden Demons

Defeating 1 of the 3 Bonus Cyclops awards 20-25x, 30-35x, or 40-45x your stake, respectively. However, you may also collect a treasure map after defeating a Bonus Cyclops, and collecting 10 treasure maps awards the golden treasure chest bonus payout.

The Golden Viking and Golden Knight are called Golden Demons, and defeating these creatures awards either a silver or golden treasure chest bonus payout of 2x or 6x your stake, respectively. This comes in addition to the regular payout the golden demons offer, which range from 50x to 180x your stake, respectively. There is also a Crocodile Bonus Demon you can defeat, and the higher your stake, the more it pays.

Giant Octopus Boss

The Giant Octopus is the highest-value boss in Boom Legend, and a rage meter is charged when you target his hard-to-miss creature. When the rage meter is filled, a prize draw is triggered, awarding 80x to 400x your stake. The Giant Octopus Boss then gets enraged, turning red in color, and you can target this enraged boss to win between 80x and 800x your stake.

Theme & Graphics

Unlike many arcade-style shooting games, Boom Legend plays out on a river instead of a subsea water world. The monsters are paraded up and down this stream in two lanes, in a more orderly fashion than the more chaotic shoot ‘em up games you may be used to. You get to meet a vast number of small and big enemies, and the bosses usually take up a large part of the game area. The cannon moves along the riverbank as you target the monsters, and each monster features unique animations. The soundtrack fits the epic theme of this game, and it’s a colorful, action-packed shooter that showers you with gold coins for each win.

Our Verdict

I’ve tested my fair share of arcade-style fish shooting games since they became popular, but Boom Legend immediately stood out as different. Most of these games offer a glorious mess of monsters coming in from all angles and crawling all over the place. However, in Boom Legend, each monster is floating by like a prized duck in a high-stakes carnival gallery, turning a frantic battlefield into a more calculated, tactical shooting range.

The mix of creatures makes the experience feel varied and novel, though, and the larger bosses do break up the orderly parading of monsters in a neat way. I’m not sure I like the whole idea of the cannon you control sliding along the riverbank, as it makes you feel less in control in a way. I prefer the static cannon you get in most other shooting games, as it can target creatures all over the game area without needing to move. It’s a minor detail, perhaps, but worth a mention.

I do like that each monster displays its value prominently as they slide down or up the river, so there is never any doubt what you are gunning for. This is a problem with many similar games, where you have to rely on the size of the monsters to gauge what they may be worth. That being said, the top rewards in this game aren’t all that impressive. I strongly suggest you start with the lowest bet level and play the Boom Legend free play demo first. Remember, each bullet fired is like the spin of the reels of a regular slot game, and the special weapons cost up to 15x your regular stake.

It’s important to use the Aim function if you want the freedom to target any creature on the screen. Otherwise, the monsters in the front row will act as shields if you’re targeting a creature in the back row. With an RTP of 97%, staying afloat isn’t all that hard if you play it smart. Reserve the special weapons only for the most valuable bosses, and focus on creatures that turn into weapons when you defeat them. There are many hours of fun to be had with Boom Legend, at least if arcade-style shooting games are your thing.
