We still have Rotten fresh in mind (no pun intended), and few developers can go from cozy to hardcore horror in an instant like Hacksaw can. Bloodthirst plays out on a stone grid with a mysterious castle silhouetted by the full moon in the background. The horror would be understated if it wasn’t for the monsters that can fill whole reels to land you prizes up to 20x your stake per reel.

In addition, you can fill the whole screen to win prizes up to 2,500x your stake for the top-tier demon monster. If you land 5 monster reels at the same time and of the same kind, they take over the whole screen. You don’t get any regular line wins or even monster reel payouts if this happens. The Immortals Bonus Round triggers when you land 4 FS scatters in view, and this also awards 10 free spins. A monster symbol is chosen at the start to become the “main symbol” for the feature, and only this symbol will expand.

When you land a full reel of the chosen symbol, it expands and the reel becomes marked. All marked reels always expand to become monster reels for the rest of the bonus round. The Upgrade Scatter upgrades the chosen symbol to the next tier, which also upgrades any marked reels.

Review Summary

It’s either heaven or hell with Hacksaw, as this developer can go from super cute releases, like Pug Life and Frank’s Farm, to blood dripping horror like what’s on display in Rotten and now in Bloodthirst. The audiovisuals create an aura of mystery and impending doom, and the monsters look scary enough when they fill whole reels. This didn’t happen all that often though, at least not in the base game.

You get more monster reels in the Bloodthirst bonus round, at least usually. This gives you smaller payouts unless you manage to fill the entire grid, but at least you get persistent smaller monster reel wins from marked reels in the Immortals bonus round. Marking all reels will, of course, give you lucrative back to back wins, but you still need a higher tier monster to truly do damage. Payouts up to 10,000x your stake is possible, which is Hacksaw’s go-to potential, and overall this is a decent installment in the horror slot genre.
