Nitropolis Review

The game plays out in a dystopian parallel reality where animal clans have taken over the show. The Dirty Dawgs, Gritty Kitties, Rouge Rats and Pug Thugs all fight over dominance of the green nitro that fuel their vehicles. Visually, the game is quite impressive, and you get plenty of fun action commentary from the crafty reel critters. The soundtrack is a bit of a mixed bag perhaps, but the punk influence shines through during the bonus round.

As you can expect with such an enormous number of winning ways, the symbols don’t pay all that much for smaller combos. The top dog pays only 5x for 6 on a payline, so you really need those Nitro Reels to get anywhere here. If you don’t know what you’re walking into, you might be a bit overwhelmed at first, but it doesn’t take that long to figure things out. It’s surely a good idea to read up on the features first though, and try the free demo version before you decide if this is for you.

You will benefit from Winning Respins both in the base game and during the bonus round here. This means that all winning symbols spin again to give you another winning chance. The respins keep coming as long as you land new winning combos.

The defining feature is definitely ELK’s innovative and trademarked mechanic called Nitro Reels™. You can land these special symbols on all the reels, and they cover 2 positions framed by green pipes with a number on top. This number tells you how many matching symbols are packed into the Nitro Reel, and you will get 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 symbols per instance.

Without any Nitro Reels on the screen, you play with the default 4,096 ways to win. However, the Nitro Reels mechanic can increase that number up to an eye-watering 85,155,840 winning ways. This far exceeds all Megaways engine games out there, and it makes for tremendously dynamic gameplay.

The Nitro Reels have more tricks up their sleeve however, as they will sometimes upgrade their number of symbols (and thus the win ways) between winning respins and/or free spins. You can also get a second chance sometimes, and this means that the Nitro Reel spins again to give you a new symbol.

You trigger the bonus round by landing 3 to 6 scatters anywhere on the reels. This gives you 10, 15, 20 or 25 free spins, respectively, and you can re-trigger the feature in the same way. Before the bonus round plays out however, a random symbol will be chosen as the “scatter paying symbol”.

This chosen symbol can land anywhere and create winners, but you will need to land at least 3 to create a scatter win. The best feature of the bonus round is the sticky Nitro Reels. Every Nitro Reel you land becomes locked in place for the duration of the bonus round, and the Winning Respins can keep the feature going for a good while here.

Review Summary

Since the Megaways engine was such a huge success, it’s only natural that other developers are testing the waters with alternative versions of that popular mechanic. Nitro Reels™ is a clever innovation from ELK Studios, but it will probably come across as somewhat confusing at first. Especially when it’s combined with the winning respins, but pretty soon you’ll get the gist of it.

In practice, Nitropolis runs like a Megaways game on crack because of the insane amount of potential winning ways available here. We are unsure if this trademarked engine will have mainstream appeal however, as the gameplay feels kind of cramped compared to Megaways engine slots. The 10,000x potential is solid enough, but not extraordinary with this many paylines, and it will be interesting to see how the Nitro Reels innovation is received in the community.
