If you’re a fan of classic slots with a modern twist (a subgenre that has a certain following) you can’t go wrong with Thunder Coins XXL. It follows closely in the footsteps of the original Thunder Coins, though, and some would say too closely. The visuals are more or less the same, although the pile of gold, jackpots, and game logo has been moved from the top of the grid to the left-hand side. Not exactly earth-shattering stuff, in other words, but that’s hardly expected in a series like this.

That being said, I prefer the visual presentation of Thunder Coins XXL over the original, but that’s just my personal taste. Another thing I like about this game is the soundtrack, which is a massive upgrade compared to the first game. It pumps you full of energy and gives you the drive to power through any dry spells, and it also adds to the 80s retro vibe, which is enjoyable. I also like the pace of the game with the turbo maxed out, and the satisfying shower of gold coins you get each time bonus symbols are collected.

Symbols tend to land in stacks in Thunder Coins XXL slot, just like in the original game, but the base game seldom delivers anything significant outside of the Thunder Coin feature. This is hardly surprising, but still worth mentioning. My experience with the bonus game is that a lot depends on how many Thunder Coin collectors you rack up. The big difference from the original game is that you can get up to 5 collectors in this game, increasing your chances for massive wins.

It’s usually a good sign when you trigger the feature with more than 2 collectors, but not always. Sometimes there is hardly anything to collect and you will most likely need to collect larger jackpots to come close to the 5,405x win cap anyway. This max win is a tad disappointing given the larger grid and the fact that you can win almost the same in the first game. All in all, Thunder Coins XXL is a decent follow-up to a decent original game, but it will not be everyone’s cup of tea.
