Starlight Wins comes across as a fairly typical installment in this growing subgenre of mobile-first, Asian-themed slots. PG Soft popularized this style with both Western and Asian themes, and plenty of smaller studios and developers have thrown themselves onto the bandwagon. It’s probably wise of Pragmatic Play to accept a studio specializing in these types of games into its fold, not least if they seek to expand further into the Asian market.

Fat Panda seems to have found inspiration in Pragmatic Play’s own Starlight Princess for this release, at least when it comes to the visual presentation. Personally, I found the anime fairy character to be a tad annoying, but mostly because of the repetitive way she keeps announcing “2x,” and so forth, each time you win. At least give the poor lady a larger vocabulary, or allow players to turn off the voiceover while keeping the soundtrack and other sound effects.

The pace and flow of the game is overall smooth, and you can choose between 2 turbo settings. You get plenty of tumble wins in the base game, boosted by the tumble multiplier, but this is hardly a very original feature. The multiplier does not exceed x5 in the base game, which is not uncommon for these types of Gonzo mechanic games, and most of the time, you land small to mid-sized wins without reaching the multiplier cap. This is to be expected, of course, and in my experience, the golden symbols to wild feature is not seen all that often either.

The staggering 100,000x max win reminded me of PG Soft's earlier titles (before they cleaned up their announced vs realistic max win act), and while a figure like this may seem unrealistic, the game’s disclosed stats and math model back it up. What Starlight Wins lacks in originality is made up for by its massive potential, but be prepared for a volatile ride.
