Our Verdict

Oriental Treasures is hardly groundbreaking with regards to the presentation, and it keeps things simple with a blurred-out backdrop that forces your attention to stay on the reel action. Sometimes, you get the sense that if you’ve seen one Asian-themed slot, you’ve seen them all, and that’s kind of the feeling I got when testing this game. The visuals are polished and pleasant enough, but there is just nothing new to discover that we haven’t seen many times before.

The sense of dejavu may be reassuring for players seeking the familiar, but daredevil explorers who crave novelty are forced to seek their kicks elsewhere. Another thing that bugged me from the get-go is the minimum bet level of £2 per spin. Not only is this overly optimistic since most players are penny punters, but providers should always make sure to include a bet level of £1. This is a nice rounded number many players crave, and it makes sorting out the true symbol and jackpot values more effortless.

The instant scatter jackpot feature, or treasure jackpots as they are called in this game, has been going strong for some years now. However, topping out at only 500x the stake makes them feel a bit underwhelming and hardly worth the chase. I do like that you can land double and triple jackpot symbols, though, as this can make it easier to clinch a larger prize. Still, this feature alone is not really enough to carry an otherwise tedious base game.

Collecting lanterns to increase the number of free spins you get when the bonus round triggers is okay, but hardly enough to truly motivate most experienced players long-term. Similar things have been done better many times, although the bonus round multiplier does help a bit, not least since it also applies to treasure jackpot wins. Overall, Oriental Treasures doesn’t really deliver anything worthwhile unless you are a diehard fan of Asian-themed slot games. It’s an okay but tame and timid experience, restrained by a, if not directly weak, at least mediocre math model.
