MexoMax 2 Review

Yggdrasil is no stranger to powerful multiplier features, and the MultiMax system is the kissing cousin of their arguably even more powerful DoubleMax feature. MexoMax 2 follows in the footsteps of the original Aztec jungle adventure, MexoMax!, albeit in a somewhat strange way since it’s essentially a reskin of their relatively recent release 4 FOXX Crew.

MexoMax 2 plays out on a 6x6 grid, like the original, and the core features and mechanics haven’t changed. Before we get to all that, let’s cover the basics. You start by choosing your bet level between €0.10 and €50 per spin, and as before, you win by landing at least 5 matching symbols in a cluster anywhere on the grid. Clusters connect vertically and/or horizontally, and 14+ premium symbols in a cluster award between 4.5x and 6.5x your stake. The low-value symbols all pay 2.5x your stake for 16+ in a cluster.

MexoMax 2 Slot - Reels Screen

As before, the Avalanche mechanic not only removes winning symbols, but also adds wilds that again increase the relevant reel multipliers. The features MexoMax 2 has ‘borrowed’ from 4 FOXX Crew are the only “new” additions, including 2 special wild symbols, 3 random modifiers that can trigger on non-winning spins, and a symbol orb collection system that can deliver jackpots of up to 1,000x your stake. The turbo spins option has been removed for some reason, but you get a new ante bet option that guarantees special wilds per Avalanche win.

The bonus round is the same as in the first game, but you cannot gamble your way to more than the maximum of 11 free spins in MexoMax 2, while 18 was possible in MaxoMax. The MultiMax reel multipliers keep building without resetting for the duration of the bonus round, increasing your chances of cracking the 10,000x max win. MexoMax 2 is a high volatility installment, and also like the predecessor, you’ll be dealing with a below-average RTP of 94%.

MexoMax 2 Features

MexoMax 2 has been upgraded with some new wild features, random jackpots, and non-winning spin modifiers, and we’ll take a closer look at how everything works below.

Avalanche Wins

The Avalanche mechanic removes winning symbols from the reels, filling the gaps with existing and new symbols that drop down. Before the symbol drop, a wild symbol is placed randomly in one of the empty positions. The Avalanche feature repeats indefinitely as long as you keep forming new winning combinations.

MultiMax Multipliers

The MultiMax Multiplier starts at x1 above each reel. Each wild symbol that the Avalanche feature generates on a reel increases that reel's multiplier by +1. In the base game, all MultiMax Multipliers reset to x1 when you hit a non-winning spin or avalanche. Multipliers are summed together (not multiplied like in the first game) if more than one multiplier is applied to the same cluster win.

Non-Winning Spin Modifiers

Random modifiers may trigger on non-winning spins or non-winning Avalanche drops, turning the non-winning spin into a winner or prolonging your Avalanche winning streak. Here’s an overview of the 3 modifiers:

• Hand of the Gods - transforms a random bunch of symbols into a cluster win.
• Temple Wind - transforms a randomly selected row of symbols into a cluster win.
• Sun Stone - transforms a random 2x2 cluster of symbols into a winning cluster.

Wild Symbols

MexoMax 2 has 3 different Wild symbols, all with the core function of substituting for regular pay symbols to help complete or improve wins. Here’s an overview:

• Regular Wilds - substitute for pay symbols.
• WildEnergy Wilds - remains on the reels until it has taken part in 2, 3, or 4 wins (depending on the number of lives it landed with), or until the Avalanche sequence ends.
• Extra Multiplier Wild - adds +x2 to +x50 to the reel multiplier on the reel it appears on.

Grand Prize

Random symbols land with a small glowing orb on them, and this orb is collected by the corresponding Grand Prize seen on the left-hand side. Each time an orb is collected, the corresponding Grand Prize may be awarded. These pay 15x, 25x, 500x, or 1,000x your stake, respectively.

MexoMax 2 Free Spins

The Bonus Round triggers when you land 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols on the same base game spin or in the same Avalanche sequence. Either way, you win 7, 9, or 11 free spins, respectively, and you can choose to gamble for up to 11 free spins if you got fewer than that from the triggering scatters. There is no way to retrigger the bonus round or win extra free spins, but the MultiMax Multipliers keep growing without ever resetting for the duration of the bonus.

Theme & Graphics

The MexoMax 2 slot game takes you back into the Mesoamerican jungle, but this time, the presentation is a bit more static and tame. No more beating heart wilds, as golden hearts now replace these, and the slithering snake is long gone as well. The surrounding jungle no longer shakes when the heavy stone symbols slam down on the grid, but the soundtrack is a bit livelier and more upbeat, perhaps to compensate. The carved Aztec mask symbols have changed a bit as well, and are a tad less dark and spooky than in the first game. Overall, the presentation is similar but feels a bit watered down, which is a somewhat strange design choice.

Pros and Cons of MexoMax 2

Our Verdict

I have to say that Yggdrasil has made some rather strange choices for this follow-up release, and MexoMax 2 feels less alive and captivating than the original game from the get-go. This is partly because the backdrop has become a static depiction of a rather tame and boring jungle, at least in comparison to the slithering snakes and jungle-shaking symbol drops of the first game. Removing the turbo spin option is also a head-scratcher, as I see no good reason not to offer players a choice in this regard.

The symbols themselves are also more bland, and all in all, it adds up to a less immersive experience. However, the most questionable choice is definitely making MexoMax 2 a reskin of 4 FOXX Crew, a game that was already inspired by the original MexoMax. Personally, I prefer 4 FOXX Crew over this clone, as that game has more charisma, charm, and fun characters. Any way you slice it, it feels kind of deceptive and cheap to make a follow-up game that’s a reskin of another release, not least such a recent one.

I don’t want to come across as too harsh on Yggdrasil either, as MexoMax 2 is a pretty solid slot game if you view it in isolation. However, it’s my job to put each game into a larger context, and we can’t simply ignore past releases and pretend it’s all good. The added features do arguably upgrade the experience compared to the first game, but it would’ve been so much better if they kept the visual style and core mechanics from the first game and tried to build something even better from that already solid starting point.

This is what most players expect from a follow-up release, after all, myself included, and in that regard, MexoMax 2 is a disappointment. To end on a positive note, players who enjoy the mechanics of 4 FOXX Crew now have an alternative with a wildly different theme. The multipliers can deliver solid to massive payouts when they keep building in the bonus round, and there are plenty of random modifiers and wild features to help keep your winning streaks going. Still, MexoMax 2 does not live up to its potential, and it will be interesting to see what Yggdrasil does with the next installment (if there indeed is a next one).
