In recent years, developer Pragmatic Play hasn’t had a reputation for being the most innovative, often milking their most successful franchises – but that’s where their subsidiaries like Fat Panda come in. With Happy Nets, they present an experience you’ve probably never had before. Without further ado, let’s jump straight in.

According to Pragmatic Play’s official documentation, Happy Nets is technically listed as a game featuring Pay Anywhere mechanics. However, that description barely scratches the surface. The studio seems modest here – or perhaps unsure how to define a system that works entirely differently from what we’ve seen before. A classic example of a Pay Anywhere setup would be Gates of Olympus, but Happy Nets is nothing like it and follows a completely different logic.

So, here’s how it all works. You’ve got a 5x4 reel set, but there are no paylines in sight, and symbols pay neither in clusters nor like scatters. And speaking of symbols, each one carries a fixed cash value, up to 300x your bet per spin. Each position of the reels is basically independent and can land either a cash symbol or a blank. Once the reels stop, a square or rectangular fishing net appears in a random position on the grid. Whatever symbols happen to fall within that net’s area are instantly collected and paid according to their displayed values. There’s not a lot going on in terms of extras here. I’ve already mentioned free spins, and, well, it's the only feature you'll find in the Happy Nets online slot. And... it plays nearly the same as the base game.

Happy Nets is very pleasantly designed. Everything is smooth and polished, with graphics and animation of top-notch quality. The game takes you to a serene lake, where a cheerful fisherman floats in his boat above the reels while worms and fish populate the reels beneath, waiting to be caught in the net (or not really). It has a lovely, lighthearted atmosphere, and a gentle soundtrack adds to it perfectly. The only downside is that the game is available exclusively in portrait mode, clearly designed with mobile play in mind. It’s still accessible on desktop though, just not in full screen.

Final Thoughts

To sum things up, I really liked the concept behind Happy Nets – it’s unique, fresh, and that alone makes it worth a try. The unusual payout system delivers a type of gameplay you’ve probably never experienced before, and that’s definitely saying something in today’s crowded slot market. Better than recycling the same formula over and over.

The gameplay itself, however, might feel a bit slow and uneventful for those who prefer fast-paced, feature-packed slots. Still, I consider Happy Nets as a pen test for the mechanic – there’s clearly a lot of potential to it, and I'll be eagerly waiting for new games evolving this concept further.
