The original Snakes and Ladders Megadice has seen decent success, so this follow-up release from Reel Kingdom is not a huge surprise. What is a bit surprising, however, is how little that has changed in Snakes and Ladders Snake Eyes. The biggest difference is the visuals, and the Pragmatic Play partner has moved on from the retro 8-bit style to a more refined presentation.

The classic board game these slot releases are based around originated in India, and it goes by the name of Moksha Patam over there. It’s actually an educational game about the wheel of karma, and good karma can land you up to 5,300x your stake in this sequel as well. The board bonus game hasn’t changed much, and you still get up to x3 multiplier wilds in the base game.

You get regular line wins in the base game, and the premium symbols pay between 15 and 50 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins. The dice Wild symbol can appear anywhere, and wilds step in for pay symbols to help complete wins. The wild dice reveal 1, 2 or 3 dots when they land, and this indicates the wild multiplier of x1, x2 or x3, respectively. Dice wilds pay 50x your stake for 5 on a payline, and the wild multiplier boosts any win the wild is a part of.

You trigger the Snakes & Ladders Board Game Bonus when 3, 4 or 5 scatters appear in view, and this gives you 12, 14 or 16 dice rolls, respectively. If you trigger the feature from 4 or 5 scatters, the scatters can sometimes turn into snake bonus symbols that award 2 additional dice rolls. The feature plays out on a 12x12-size board, which gives you a total of 144 squares.

The gorilla token starts at the very bottom corner of the grid, and you click to roll a pair of dice to determine where the token moves. What each square contains is randomly determined, and this includes cash prizes, total win multipliers, snakes, ladders, blanks and bananas. You get +1 extra roll if the dice show “snake eyes” (that is 1 and 1), and here’s an overview of the square modifiers:

• Money prizes - adds between 4x and 100x to the total win.
• Multiplier - boosts your current total win.
• Ladder - moves the token up to the top of the ladder if you land at the bottom.
• Snake - takes you down to the tip of the tail if you land on the snake head.
• Banana - removes all other bananas, and adds random cash values to the board.
• Final square - reach the final position to win a bonus of 1,000x your stake.

Some squares can randomly award a hidden rope charmer, and this moves the token to a random higher position on the board. The feature ends if you land on the final square, or when you run out of dice rolls. You are guaranteed to win at least 20x your stake though, and if you win less the gorilla goes into rage mode. It moves to the end of the grid, collecting all prizes and multipliers along the way while ignoring snakes, ladders, bananas and rope charmers.

If you reach the final square, there is a chance you may retrigger the bonus round. A pair of dice is rolled, and you need to land equal numbers to get the retrigger. You get the same number of dice rolls as you got initially when you retrigger the feature this way. Rolling doubles during the feature can also award a retrigger, if you manage to do this 4 times in the same bonus round.

We had our hopes up for more changes and tweaks in this Reel Kingdom follow-up to be honest, but Snakes and Ladders Snake Eyes turned out to be very similar to the original Snakes and Ladders Megadice. The retro visuals have been modernized though, so this sequel may appeal to a different crowd at least visually. The gameplay is close to identical to what you get in the original, however, so it’s a bit hard to justify this release.

By all means, Snakes and Ladders Snake Eyes comes with a highly entertaining and unusual bonus round, and it’s always fun to see how far you can take it. The wild collection system that offered a way into the board game has been replaced by a somewhat similar retrigger system instead, but no real changes have been made to the board game modifiers. The 5,300x potential hasn’t changed either, but the top-tier 96.08 % RTP is lower than the 96.68 % you get in the original.
