We have enjoyed pretty much every game in Print Studios modest back catalog, and this is a small developer that’s always looking to push boundaries and do things in new and innovative ways. Reapers is by far the most unusual thing they have released thus far, and it’s a sci-fi adventure that plays out like a videogame/slot hybrid.

Instead of the more common shoot ‘em up system, this game is all about taking down barriers to get to the next and more lucrative level. The cluster pays engine comes with plenty of alien critters, special modifiers, and action all the way. Shutting down all 15 barriers takes you to the bonus game, which is hard to reach by the way, but it can also pay up to 20,000x your stake.

You will land blocker tiles and/or active symbols on the 8x8 cluster pays grid, and you need between 5 and 25+ matching symbols in a cluster to win. The payouts top out at 25 to 500 x your stake for a 25-symbols winning cluster, and there are no wild symbols in this game.

Each grid represents a barrier on the way to the Bonus Round, and you need to unlock 15 barriers to get there. The barriers come in groups of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, and a barrier is simply the game grid you play on. Winning clusters get a corresponding Reaper symbol next to it, and all adjacent matching symbols/clusters turn into Energy Cells.

These Energy Cells are then collected as a win, and the Reaper symbol gets 1 charge per 5 collected energy cells. You need a charge to remove the barrier, and more charges are needed the further you progress along the 15 barrier trail.

Reaper symbols come with unique special abilities, and these are triggered when a Power Core symbol is collected. This happens when the Power Core is adjacent to the Reaper symbol, and you get the following modifiers from it:

• Energizer - makes all Reaper symbols generate one Energy charge.
• Linker - connects Reapers so they can collect from each other.
• Transformer - turns remaining purple symbols into another type of symbol.
• Expander - collects symbols in a 4x4 sized area.
• Multiplier - boosts collected winnings by up to x10.

The Bonus Game comes with a hit rate of 1 in 2,604 rounds (not a typo), and as mentioned, you need to remove all 15 barriers to get there. The feature has 5 levels, and you’ll collect energy cells to progress to higher levels as you tunnel through the grids. A critter symbol is removed per level, and 5-25-symbols cluster wins are picked up as well. You need 430, 520, 590, and 790 collected Energy Cells to progress to levels 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively.

There is no direct Bonus Buy option (RTP ranges from 96.58 to 97.25 % for the most expensive option) in this game, but we still assume the feature buy menu is unavailable in the UK and perhaps other jurisdictions as well. If available, you can purchase 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 guaranteed Reapers for 3.4x, 18.4x, 50x, 130x, or 425x your stake, respectively.

We commend Print Studios for taking the risk involved with breaking down barriers (no pun intended) of what an online slot can be. We know they not only poured their heart and soul into this production, but also a significant budget that involved a real sci-fi author for the “Hunter S. Thompson in Space” storyline. That being said, we found the gameplay to be a tad confusing at first, and it’s definitely an acquired taste.

The 20,000x win cap hit rate is a decent 1 in 4.39m, and the average win from the hard-to-get bonus game is a solid 449.38x your stake. You crack the max win once every 2,017 bonus game triggers on average, and 1 in 18.3 times you reach level 5. The final base game barrier group can be seen as a semi-bonus, and happens 1 in 289 rounds (76x avg. payout). It’s best to just try the free demo game for a while, as there is no other way to know if you’ll like what Print has come up with here.
