Stockholm-based Fantasma Games is one to follow, and they have almost outdone themselves this time. Maze Escape Megaways is jam packed with innovation, almost to the point where it can be too much to handle for some players. The game feels like a hybrid between a standard Megaways title and a grid slot, just like the Minotaur guarding the labyrinth is a man/bull hybrid.

Surely, some players will be put off by the “complicated” gameplay, and the Avalanche sequences are admittedly a bit slow moving. However, there is a lot of excitement to be discovered here if you are open to something new. The record potential is one thing, but exploring the “reel labyrinth” with your “path symbols” on each Avalanche roll is quite fun when you start to understand how it all works.

The middle reel position on the first reel comes with a golden frame. When you land a winning symbol in this golden frame, you trigger the Shifting Maze Avalanche feature. This is when you progress into the “reel maze”, and only the triggering symbols are left on the grid.

Everything shifts one reel to the left, and new symbols will drop down to fill all the non-blocker tile positions. Each reel comes with 1 to 6 blocker tiles, but 2 of them will be removed every time the reel shifts to the left. Scatters will be collected as the feature plays out, and this can help you trigger the bonus round.

The triggering symbols become the “Path symbols”, and you need to land new winning combos with the path symbols to keep the feature going. Some of the blocker tiles come with special symbols, and these will unlock different features when they are removed. The tile modifiers are designed to prolong your winning streak, and they work as follows:

• Guidance of Athena - adds up to 4 Path symbols before the next symbol drop.
• Minotaur Wild - turns a whole reel wild with a random multiplier up to 7x.

Triggering the Labyrinth bonus round is done by collecting 3 labyrinth disc scatters in the same round. Our best advice is to give it some time, as there is a pretty good chance the game will grow on you.

It can lead to lengthy sequences with solid total payouts, but Fantasma could have sped things up a bit by filling all the reels at the same time.
