We’ve seen some successful female adventurers in the popular Gonzo mechanic genre over the years, and Booming Games has decided to try their luck with a brand new heroine. Kim's Wild Journey is visually somewhat similar to Gonzo’s Quest, but the stone tiles are blocking your valley/mountain view instead of the entrance to El Dorado.

More importantly however, is the fact that the base game cascading wins multiplier trail has been replaced by a cascading wins Wild Level system, dishing out up to 3 randomly placed wilds at best. The wild level system is further enhanced with a multiplier system in the bonus round, and you’ll definitely need multiplier wilds to close in on the 15,846x potential.

The so-called Majors (i.e. premium symbols) pay between 2.5 and 12.5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Wild symbols substitutes for any pay symbol to help complete winning combinations. Winning symbols are removed via the Cascading Reels mechanic, and this also triggers the Wild Level increase feature.

For each win, winning symbols explode, and new and/or existing symbols drop down to fill the gaps. Each consecutive cascade increases the Wild Level as seen on the left-hand side, and this awards either 1, 2 or 3 wilds randomly placed on the grid as the cascading sequence comes to an end. Everything resets once you hit a non-winning cascade, and you start all over again with a new paid spin.

The Kim’s Wild Free Spins Round comes with a Scatter Collector System, as well as Wild Multipliers. You trigger the feature by landing 3, 4 or 5 scatters anywhere in view, and this awards 8, 10 or 12 free spins, respectively. Collecting 3 red gemstone scatters takes you to the next levels of the feature, while also awarding +2 extra spins, and there are 4 levels in total.

Each level comes with a different multiplier range, and these are added to the wilds generated by whatever Wild Level you achieve per cascading sequence. Here’s an overview:

• Level 1 (default) - 1, 2 or 3 consecutive cascades award 1, 2 or 3 wilds, respectively, with multipliers of x1, x2 or x3, respectively.
• Level 2 (3 collected scatters) - 1, 2 or 3 consecutive cascades award 1, 2 or 3 wilds, respectively, with multipliers of x2, x3 or x4, respectively.
• Level 3 (6 collected scatters) - 1, 2 or 3 consecutive cascades award 1, 2 or 3 wilds, respectively, with multipliers of x3, x4 or x5, respectively.
• Level 4 (9 collected scatters) - 1, 2 or 3 consecutive cascades award 1, 2 or 3 wilds, respectively, with multipliers of x4, x5 or x6, respectively.

Finally, non-UK players, and anyone living in an eligible jurisdiction, may take advantage of the Bonus Buy feature. This will set you back 75x your stake, and you’re then guaranteed to land at least 3 scatters on the spin that follows. The bonus round triggers every 212.7 spins on average, just so you know.

Review Summary

The cinematographic intro starts the game off on a dramatic high note that Kim's Wild Journey unfortunately doesn’t quite manage to live up to. First of all, the stone blocks are not convincing, and it feels like they're made of Papier-mâché instead of dense material. This ties in with the gravity setting, as they fall either too slow or too fast (turbo and/or double-click), which again gives you a somewhat awkward pace that poisons the overall gameplay experience.

Looking past that, replacing the familiar multiplier trail system with wild levels didn’t really take us on the “wild journey” we were promised. Perhaps if more wilds were possible, instead of only 3, it would have worked better. The single spin max win is 312.5x your stake without multiplier action, so the 15,846x potential can only be cracked when the multiplier wilds come into play in the bonus round. Still, it seems far-fetched, and leveling up didn’t seem to happen very often either. A nice try from Booming, but it falls flat on further inspection.

Lara Croft Temples and Tombs - is the most popular - and deservingly so - installment in the Tomb Raider series so far, and you get an increasing rolling reels multiplier up to x5 in the base game. It can go as high as x15 in the bonus round, and you can win up to 7,343x your stake. There are also fixed jackpots up to 5,000x up for grabs.
