Coba Reborn Review

Snakes are usually not something you would want to encounter on a jungle expedition, and anywhere else for that matter, but in Coba Reborn you will rejoice every time these slithering creatures are unleashed. The temple jungle visuals are similar to the original game, but darker and a bit more brushed up on the details, perhaps. Nothing too revolutionary though, and the gameplay still revolves around unleashing as many snakes as possible.

This is done via the winning-symbols collecting Snake Meter, and it comes with 4 levels. Each level-up awards 3 snakes, until you get 6 snakes when reaching level 4. Brand new Orchid symbols can also unleash snakes, as well as upgrade snakes with different features. Crossing snakes produce multiplier wilds, and you can win up to 25,000x your stake in this game too. The 94 % RTP is 1 percentage point lower than in the first game, which is something to consider. We still think Coba Reborn is worth checking out though, and at least there are no RTP ranges to worry about.

You win by landing 5 to 15+ matching symbols connected in a cluster anywhere on the 7x7 grid, and 15+ sized clusters pay between 1.5 and 50 x your stake. On the lower end, 5 sized winning clusters award between 0.05 and 1 x your stake. Wilds can appear in this game, and their job is to step in for pay symbols to help complete and/or improve cluster wins.

Winning symbols are removed via the Avalanche mechanic, and the gaps are then filled by new and/or existing symbols dropping down. This repeats for as long as you keep your winning streak going, and the removed symbols are collected in the Snake Progress Meter. Filling this meter halfway awards wilds in random positions after a redrop, and snakes are unleashed when you fill the meter completely.

You get 3 snakes unleashed per level 1, 2, or 3, and 6 snakes are unleashed when you reach level 4. The snakes are basically a cluster of symbols that move randomly across the grid, and they are a minimum of 5 symbols long to guarantee a win. All snakes start out with a yellow color, meaning that they are guaranteed to outlast the next cascade, and then they turn blue which means they can die on the next cascade.

The first symbol the snake moves over becomes its head, and all symbols it moves over after that are transformed into the head symbol. The exception is orchid symbols or wilds, but if the snake head moves over an orchid from the get-go, the head turns wild. This means that it will turn symbols wild as it slithers around doing its thing.

The snake turns yellow again if it moves across a symbol type that’s identical to itself, and this also helps the snake grow. The same happens if the snake moves over a wild symbol, and a blue snake will die when it does not move across either its own symbol type, a wild symbol, or an orchid symbol. Wild snakes must cross over other wilds, multiplier wilds, or orchid symbols to avoid death, and wilds are worth the same as the top-tier win symbol.

Multiplier wilds are created when 2 different snakes cross paths on the grid, and the first one will be an x2 multiplier wild. The wild multiplier doubles per crossover at the same position, and the multipliers are multiplied together if more than one wild partakes in the same win. Any snake that crosses/eats its own body will die immediately, unless the ouroboros feature is active (see below).

There are 4 Orchid symbols that can spawn in this game, and each flower possesses a special power as follows:

Blood Orchid - spawns 2 snakes when 2 blood orchids are present on the grid. One instance can also drain the lifeforce from another orchid to spawn a single snake. A random amount of new snakes are unleashed when a snake eats a blood orchid, and this symbol turns wild after its snake has been unleashed.

Hydra Orchid - spawns a new, identical snake when eaten by a snake, and this includes any upgrades the original snake has (see below).

Rebirth Orchid - allows a dead snake to be resurrected, meaning that it becomes active again just like it was before dying.

Ouroboros Orchid - gives snakes who eat it the ability to survive eating their own body, and instead turn the snake yellow while spawning a multiplier wild in the crossing position.

Snakes can carry both the ouroboros and rebirth upgrades at the same time, but they cannot get more than one of each at the same time.

Finally, The X-iter Bonus/Feature Buy menu is available in some jurisdictions, but not in the UK for sure. It comes with the following options this time:

• Boosted Chance - pay 2x your stake to more than double your chance of reaching level 1 on the Snake Meter.
• Flower Power - pay 10x your stake for a spin with 3+ random orchid symbols.
• All Ouroboros - pay 25x your stake for a spin with double blood orchids to unleash snakes that can all eat themselves.
• Bali Boost - pay 100x your stake to fill the Snake Meter to reach at least level 1.
• Coba - pay 500x the stake to trigger level 4 with 6 unleashed snakes.

Review Summary

The original Coba was a highly enjoyable affair, and the innovative snake system has been upgraded with pretty significant new features in Coba Reborn. The core of the gameplay may be the same, but it’s hard to demand a total revolution from a game that already sticks out as much as this series does. Winning symbols are collected to fill the Snake Meter, and getting halfway and beyond awards wilds to keep your winning streak going. That sums up the base game pretty well, but what you really want is the snake action, of course.

Getting to level 4 is far from easy, but you can upgrade to new levels to get 3 new snakes all the way up there. The snakes act more or less like before, but with the big difference that they can be upgraded via the orchids. Orchids can produce more snakes as well, which helps, and the solid 25,000x potential remains the same. The RTP has dropped to 94 % though, which may be a dealbreaker for some, and this is also a more volatile installment. The pros and cons sort of balance each other out, but the cynic in us would probably stick with the original game.
