Games Global has long since grown into a global slot developer family of sorts, and the members of this family have no trouble sharing even trademarked features between each other. However, we do suspect that this is a condition for becoming part of the family in the first place, more than love for the competitor studios. Either way, Chili Bonanza X UP is Infinity Dragon Studios’ first stab at the X UP format invented by Alchemy Gaming.

You don’t get too many surprises in that regard, and the base game is mostly about collecting X UP tokens to upgrade the multiplier for your next bonus round. You will benefit from expanding wilds on all reels in all stages of the game as well, and the multiplier can also be upgraded during the FS round. It goes up to x50 at best, which can lead to solid payouts up to 50,000x your stake. Chili Bonanza X UP has its charm, and the strong math model should attract some attention amongst both new players and fans of the series.

The premium symbols pay between 2.33 and 4 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and Wilds can appear on all 5 reels to help you out. Wilds always expand to cover the entire reel when they appear, and wilds step in for pay symbols to help complete and/or improve wins. In addition, landing pure wild wins pay up to 4.17x your stake for 5 of a kind in this game.

You need to land exactly 2 scatters in view to be awarded with 1 X UP token, and it’s collected by the Multiplier Meter seen on the right-hand side. The meter starts at x2 at the very bottom, and collecting tokens takes you up the meter. You need 23 collected tokens to reach the x50 multiplier at the very top, and the multiplier is not active until the bonus round triggers.

You need 3 scatters on reels 2, 3, and 4 in the base game to trigger the Bonus Round, and this gives you 8 free spins with a 2x upfront scatter payout. Whatever multiplier you have achieved during base game play (as described above) will become active from the first free spin, and the bonus round is automatically triggered if you reach the x50 multiplier level in the base game.

You can keep increasing the multiplier during the bonus round as well, but x50 is still the upper limit. Scatters can appear on reels 2 and 4 during the feature, and 2 scatters in view gives you +2 extra spins and one X UP token. The multiplier will boost any win for the duration of the bonus round, but it resets when you return to the base game.

The Upsizer and the Bonus Buy features are available in some jurisdictions, but not in the UK for sure. The Upsizer feature allows you to pay to upgrade to a higher multiplier once the bonus round has been triggered. You need to trigger the bonus round organically before the bonus buy feature becomes available. Buying the feature gives you a random starting multiplier between x1 and x50.

Review Summary

Players familiar with Alchemy Gaming’s X UP system will not find anything new in Chili Bonanza X UP, but this is still a somewhat charming Mexicana release from Infinity Dragon Studios. It’s their first attempt with the system, so it’s understandable that they’ve decided to play it safe. You get expanding wilds to help you out in all stages, and these tend to land in pairs many times. This is especially useful if you hit a few of them on the first two reels, which happens on occasions.

It’s a bit annoying when the math model does not allow for a £/€1 bet size, and having symbols pay 2.33x and 4.17x the stake is not visually pleasing either. The X UP system makes you want to postpone the bonus round trigger until you’ve reached a decent multiplier, unless you don’t mind paying for the Upsizer option. The 50,000x potential is solid enough to raise some eyebrows, and it certainly helps lift this release above the swamp of mediocrity.
