There’s something strangely familiar with many, if not all, of the 6 rulers in Rulers of the World: Empire Treasures, and we were a bit surprised to learn that this is not a branded effort. The India ruler looks a bit like a bearded Mel Gibson, while the Egypt ruler has a hint of Britney Spears in her gaze. We’re not entirely sure about all of them, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they’re all modeled after more or less famous actors and/or singers.

We could go on and on, but the point is that there is a Hollywood-esque cinematographic epicness over this Playtech Vikings production, and it comes with a suiting soundtrack to boot. Too bad the 883x potential doesn’t live up to the rest of the game, which strangely is the case in several previous installments as well. The Grand Jackpot seeds at £/€200,000 though, but a consistently higher potential would have made this series - and the game at hand - even more convincing.

The premium symbols, consisting of the 6 rulers of the world, pay between 3.75 and 12.5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Wild symbol pays 18.75x your stake for the same. Of course, the Wild symbol also steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combinations.

A feature frame may appear like a flame around the bottom position on reel 5 at random times, and this may trigger the Ruler Respin feature. If a premium ruler symbol lands within the frame, all instances of it turn wild and you’re granted a respin. The frame remains in place, and the respin wild transformation process continues up to 5 times, as long as you land new ruler symbols within the frame per respin.

You trigger the Bonus Round when 3 cube scatters appear on reels 1, 3 and 5 at the same time. Only Egypt Mode is available the first time you trigger the bonus round, but you unlock the next mode for each bonus round trigger. There are 6 bonus round modes in total, one for each of the rulers:

• Egypt Mode - awards 15 free spins, and the feature frame is active on every spin. This can trigger Ruler Respins like in the base game.
• Rome Mode - awards 12 free spins, and the sticky feature frame now expands one position to the left when non-ruler symbols land within it. You can thus get all bottom positions covered. Kongo Mode - awards 10 free spins, and turns all symbol instances into wilds for the current free spin when they appear in the feature frame.
• China Mode - awards 7 free spins, and comes with 1 to 5 feature frames (one per reel) per spin. All instances of ruler symbols landing inside the frames become wild.
• India Mode - awards 5 free spins, and you get a 2x2 feature frame that covers the bottom of reel 4 and 5. Rulers landing inside triggers the wild transform respin mode.
• Britain Mode - awards only 2 free spins, and all instances of rulers landing inside the reel 5 feature frame turn wild for the current spin.

You can win extra spins in 4 of the bonus rounds, and you get 3 extra free spins when you land 2 scatters anywhere in view. Landing 3 scatters retriggers the whole feature, but neither is possible in India or Britain mode.

Review Summary

We have trouble understanding why Playtech, and Playtech Vikings this time, keeps insisting on such low potentials in their Empire Treasures series. Wild Crusade: Empire Treasures and Vikings: Empire Treasures are honorable exceptions, but Rulers of the World: Empire Treasures is unfortunately not. With such an epic and cinematographic presentation, the measly 883x max win almost looks like a joke in comparison.

The pace is decent though, but we wouldn’t have minded a turbo spin option, and the Ruler Respin feature can lead to tense base game moments and okay top-up wins. We didn’t have time to unlock all the bonus round modes, unfortunately, but at least you get plenty of options and variations of the core wild transformation mechanic. The random Jackpot feature is your only chance to win big, which is a shame since everything else is pretty solid.
