Blue Oyster Cult has taught us that “seasons don’t fear the reaper”, but we had no idea that the Phoenix Bird had any reason to fear the hooded angel of death. The winged mythological creature is famous for its ability to resurrect itself, and somehow this has stirred ELK to spin a whole slot around its supposed final destination. Phoenix Graveyard is a darker than usual release from this developer, set in a gothic Victorian era town.

The random Tombstone Frame system makes the base game highly unpredictable, not unlike what you might be used to from the Nitro Reels in ELK’s popular Nitropolis range. The Grim Reaper Respins is a highlight, not least if he clashes with the Phoenix Wild, and there are 3 tiers of the bonus round. They all come with the jumping Phoenix Wilds though, and these can be upgraded with a multiplier via sticky Tombstone frames.

The 3 character premium symbols pay 1.5 to 4 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins. Tombstone Frames may appear at random times as the reels spin, and they can cover up to all 15 reel positions. Each frame comes with a number on top, and this indicates how many symbols each position will generate. Up to 10 symbols are possible per frame, and this ‘Sudden Death’ feature can generate millions of win ways.

The Grim Reaper Wild and Phoenix Wild can land at random times, and they come with a default x1 multiplier. If a wild is split by a Sudden Death Tombstone however, the wild multiplier becomes equal to the number above the tombstone frame. The Grim Reaper Wild triggers respins as it moves 1 step to the left per spin, and the respins feature continues until he walks off the grid.

When the Phoenix Wild lands adjacent to the Grim Reaper Wild, the reaper attacks the bird. This doubles either the Phoenix Wild multiplier or the Grim Reaper Wild multiplier. The Phoenix Wild may also fly to a new position, leaving a feather wild behind. The feather can turn into a Phoenix Wild on a later spin.

The Bonus Round triggers when you land 3, 4 or 5 bonus scatters anywhere in view. This gives you 6, 8 or 10 free spins, respectively, with 1, 2 or 3 Phoenix Wilds, also respectively. The Phoenix Wilds fly to new random positions per spin, taking on a multiplier if they land inside a tombstone frame. Tombstone frames are carried over from the triggering spin, and all tombstones are sticky for the duration of the feature.

Review Summary

As much as we enjoyed the dark and grim atmosphere in Phoenix Graveyard, the theme isn’t all that easy to get a handle on. Mixing the mythological Phoenix Bird with the Grim Reaper seems a bit incongruent, but you don’t really care too much when they move around the grid to land you payouts. The Tombstone frames concept can rack up an impressive number of win ways, making huge wins possible out of nowhere.

We also appreciate that you can trigger all 3 tiers of the bonus round organically, although the feature comes across as less insane and manic than in the dystopian post-apocalyptic Nitropolis series. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though, and when sticky tombstone frames start to accumulate pretty much anything can happen. At least to the tune of 10,000x your stake, that is, and overall we found Phoenix Graveyard to be well worth a visit.
