Triple Cherry has joined Yggdrasil’s partner program for this release, and Mayan Waterfalls comes with cartoon-style visuals set against a majestic pyramid temple in the background. The spin button makes a splash every time you hit it, as it’s apparently submerged below water. This can get a tad annoying after a while, but at least it’s original. Originality is this developers forte after all, and you get an innovative Progress Corner system in this game.

Orbs are collected in the relevant corners, and this increases your chances of getting the level 2 bonus round instead of the less exciting level 1 feature. A so-called Waterfall Event can trigger at any given time in all stages of the game, and it can potentially fill the whole screen with wild symbols. The level 2 bonus round comes with a Full Moon Wheel that upgrades the feature with different extras and modifiers, and you can win up to 2,164x your stake in this low volatility installment.

The premium symbols pay between 6 and 15 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Wild symbol pays 18x your stake for the same. The Wild also steps in for any pay symbol to help complete and/or improve line wins, and it can appear on any reel to do this.

You can land Waterfall symbols at any given time as well, and this triggers a Waterfall Event. You will then see a waterfall animation cover the whole grid, and when it’s removed between 1 and 26 symbols will have been turned into wilds.

Progress Corners can be seen in all 4 corners of the grid, and you need orbs to land to fill up their respective meters. Orbs display 1 of 4 colors when they appear, and they are added to the meter of the corresponding color. Up to 150 points can be added to each corner meter this way, and the progress increases your chances of getting the level 2 bonus round from the Ancient Wheel.

The Ancient Wheel feature triggers from 3 scatters in view, and the 3rd scatter reveals 1 of the 4 corner meter colors. The Wheel comes with 12 segments, and landing on the chosen color takes you to level 2. If you don’t land on the selected color you will still get level 1.

The levels determine which Free Spins feature you get, and below is an overview of the 2 bonus rounds:

• The Level 1 Bonus Round awards 8 free spins, and it plays out similarly to the base game. However, you can now land Waxing Moon symbols, and these activate 1 of the 4 waxing moon corners. You get to level 2 of the feature if you manage to activate all 4 waxing moon corners.
• The Level 2 Bonus Round also gives you 8 free spins, and it comes with the possibility of landing Full Moon symbols. Review Summary

Triple Cherry is a developer that is not afraid of going their own way and trying new and experimental things, and the results are, as you can imagine, somewhat varied. Mayan Waterfalls is a decent game, but we couldn’t help but feel that something was missing. It was hard to pinpoint exactly what that something is though, but the somewhat sluggish pace didn’t help either. The Waterfall Event can turn all 26 positions wild though, which can lead to solid wins in all stages of the game.

The progress corner system is somewhat original as well, although the game makes too big of a deal of each collection in our view. Nothing really comes of it before the Ancient Wheel feature triggers anyway, and the regular Level 1 bonus round isn’t all that exciting. It’s the same as the base game, and your sole aim is to upgrade to level 2. Getting Full Moon Wheel spins in level 2 didn’t seem all that hard at least, and the benefits are decent. However, the 2,164x potential seals the deal, and Mayan Waterfalls cannot really escape sinking into the swamp of mediocrity.
