Hacksaw has made an interesting choice for their first-ever follow-up title, and those who wished for more meat on the bones are bound to be pleased. Cubes 2 is a worthy follow-up title indeed, and it’s clearly designed to be a complementary addition with a stronger appeal to high risk/reward punters. The core mechanics are similar, and the visual presentation has not been altered significantly either.

The base game is all about expanding the reel set, landing as many multi-color cluster wins as possible, and raking in a corner multiplier or two while you’re at it. The previous center-position ‘X’ multiplier has quadrupled into each corner on the 5x5 starting grid, and you now have 2 bonus rounds instead of 1. Brand new Color Blast Jackpots adds to the excitement, and the 10,500x potential is a significant leap from the first game.

Every time you land a winning cluster of 5+ matching symbols, the grid expands with 1 cube row on all sides of the square. The starting 5x5 grid can thus expand up to 11x11 in size, just like in the original game. When you don’t land a new winning cluster, the grid resets to 5x5 again for the next round.

The corners on the 5x5 grid are marked by an ‘X’, and these symbols remain in position as the grid expands. If a winning cluster involves an X-symbol, the X will turn into a number equal to the number of winning symbols in the cluster. This then becomes the multiplier for the total win, and if several X-symbols are involved the multipliers are added together.

When you manage to land 5 different-color cluster wins in the same spin sequence, you trigger the regular Bonus Round. You will then pick from 5 cubes to get extra spins, and the intro pick’em game stops once a color is revealed. This becomes your sticky color during the free spins round, meaning that all wins with that color remain frozen in place for repeated wins.

The grid no longer resets between spins, and the sooner you make it to the full 11x11 grid size, the better. There are also 3 Color Blast Jackpots up for grabs, and these are instant cash prizes awarded for a certain amount of winning symbols with the chosen color. This bonus round does not come with X multipliers however, but you can win up to 10,500x in total via the Color Blast Jackpots:

Hacksaw Gaming has not taken too many chances with this sequel, which is probably a wise choice for a game that’s so “out there” to begin with. Still, everything has been significantly beefed up, including the volatility and the 10,500x potential. Visually, Cubes 2 looks pretty much the same as the original game, and the core reel expansion mechanic is also similar.

You now have 2 bonus rounds to look forward to however, and reeling in repeat wins from the sticky winning clusters is still an exciting prospect. While casual punters might wanna stick with the first game, Cubes 2 offers a great alternative for the high risk/reward crowd. That being said, a “golden middle way lifeline” has been thrown in via the less volatile Multi Color bonus buy option (not for UK players).
