Captain Xeno's Earth Adventure comes with a somewhat unusual and humorous sci-fi theme, and apparently Captain Xeno, together with his motley alien crew, needed a pit stop on Earth to repair their pirate space ship that took a beating in their last adventure.

The 5x4 reels spin at the rear end of the ship that has landed in a rocky desert somewhere, but it jumps into hyperspace when the bonus round triggers. Your bankroll will be patched up by random extra wilds and the symbol split mechanic, and the latter can be upgraded by collecting scatters in the bonus round. The math model is solid except for the usual RTP ranges, and you can win up to a decent 10,000x your stake.

The 5 premium character symbols, Atom, Drox, Boon, Chief Mechanic Filla and Captain Xeno, pay between 1 and 3 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and the Wild symbol pays the same as Xeno himself. When the Electric Shock feature triggers at random times, a random symbol type is selected to become the splitting symbol. All instances on the grid are then split in two, but wilds and scatters cannot be split. The symbol split mechanic can generate up to 32,768 win ways when maxed out in the base game.

The Emergency Wilds feature comes with a win guarantee, and it adds 1 to 5 wilds randomly placed on the grid. Finally, you have the Engine Recharge feature, which adds 2 scatters to the reels at random times. This, of course, increases your likelihood of triggering the bonus round.

The Bonus Round triggers when you land 3, 4 or 5 scatters anywhere in view, and this awards 8, 10 or 12 free spins, respectively. The splitting symbols feature triggers more frequently during the bonus round, and the triggering scatters are collected in the meter above the reels. You’ll keep collecting scatters in the meter, and it awards extra spins and upgrades the number of splits per splitting symbol:

• Symbols split in 3 when 7 scatters have been collected, and you get +4 extra spins.
• Symbols split in 4 when 11 scatters have been collected, and you get +4 extra spins.

This means that up to 20 free spins can be won in total from the feature, and once the meter has been filled with 11 scatters you will not land any new scatters as long as the bonus round lasts. When symbols split in 4, you can benefit from up to 100,000 win ways at the most.

Review Summary

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but we’re unsure if NoLimit City feels flattered or wronged by Play’n Go’s recent poaching on their territory. The symbol splitting feature in Captain Xeno's Earth Adventure is very similar to their xWays mechanic, but looking past the copycat issues, the feature can still be highly effective in boosting both win ways and payouts. Up to 10,000x your stake is still not in the same league as NLC though, and the 1 in 1 billion probability doesn’t help either.

The space pirate alien theme is neatly done and kind of fun, and the visual presentation is solid as usual from this highly productive developer. Getting to the 4-symbols split tier of the bonus round is not always that easy though, but the 3-symbols split level seemed more achievable. Everything comes together in a fast-paced and entertaining way, but it cannot escape the assembly line stamp that NLC avoids by having a lower-tempo and perfectionist approach.
