Basing one game upon an obscure Merv Griffin game show from 1975 is daring enough, but for whatever reason, IGT has decided to create a whole series. Wheel of Fortune: Ruby Riches is just the latest installment, hot on the heels of the Megaways version that was released only weeks ago.

If the name Merv Griffin rings a bell, it’s probably because you remember the Seinfeld episode where Kramer creates his own talk show in his apartment by piecing together the discarded set of said Merv Griffin. This is a pretty good analogy of how this game feels actually, like a manic attempt at recreating the past. Co-host Vanna White makes a cameo appearance, and we assume the action commentary is Pat Sajak.

The Ca$hLink Deluxe feature is triggered whenever you land the Treasure Chest Collector symbol on reel 5 without any Cash Coin symbols on reel 1. You will then collect all the coin values from the present Coin scatter symbols. You can also win 5 different jackpots from the jackpot coins that can also land.

More than one fixed jackpot can be landed per feature, and they are worth the following:

• The Grand Jackpot is worth 150x your stake.
• The Mega Jackpot is worth 83.33x your stake.
• The Major Jackpot is worth 41.66x your stake.
• The Minor Jackpot is worth 25x your stake.
• The Mini Jackpot is worth 8.3x your stake.

When you land at least 1 cash coin on reel 1, together with the Treasure Chest symbol on reel 5, you trigger the Wheel Bonus. The sum of all the coin scatters make up the prize you’ve initially secured. The Wheel of Fortune then spins, and this might boost your total win with a multiplier of either 5x, 10x or 20x, or you can simply win another cash prize in the same range as your initial win.

You can have more than 1 highlighted Wheel pointer depending on the size of your initial win, and this means that you can win multiple prizes from the Bonus Wheel. If that’s the case, the respective multiplier values and/or cash prizes are added together. If you land on the Jackpot segment, you win the game’s largest fixed jackpot worth 1,000x your stake.

The free spins round is triggered when you land scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 on the same spin. IGT has put together a strange creation with Wheel of Fortune: Ruby Riches. We’re a bit unsure how this all ties together, but we get the game show angle. Everything looks very dated, like a faded host trying desperately to revive his glory days. The elderly Vanna White with the sparkly dress clapping her hands maniacally together as the Wheel Bonus starts is pretty much a perfect symbol of this game.

The action commentary is equally manic, and the whole thing reminds us of the unforgettable speed-fuelled hallucinations of Sara Goldfarb in the gut-wrenching Aronofsky drama Requiem For A Dream. It’s hard to get what’s really going on, but you know you just want it to end before you find yourself rambling wild-eyed to strangers on the subway about the grand prize you’re about to win when you go on television.
