AvatarUX has finally decided to move on from simply churning out one PopWin mechanic game after another, and Zombie aPOPalypse is their first installment with the brand new and innovative MultiPop mechanic. Instead of winning symbols popping to expand the grid, each cascading win increases the relevant position multipliers up to x5 in the base game.

The comic book zombie theme is somewhat understated, which creates a menacing vibe that’s further amplified by the eerie soundtrack and bizarre sound effects. The 5x4 grid is set in a post-apocalyptic world, and the position multipliers never reset in the bonus round. They can go as high as x10 in the feature, and this can lead to payouts up to 20,000x your stake.

The Ante Bet option can be turned on/off between base game spins, and it costs 25 % more per spin to keep it on. The benefit is that your bonus round chances are doubled. The character premium symbols pay between 0.75 and 2 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins, and there are no wild symbols in this game. Wins pay both ways, but not 5 of a kind wins.

Winning symbols are removed via the MultiPop mechanic, and positions are filled with new randomly selected symbols. This process repeats as long as you keep winning. All winning positions get a +1 multiplier attached to them via the MultiPop feature, and the multiplier increases by +1 per win up to x5 at the most in the base game. Everything resets between paid spins.

If a position reaches the x5 maximum multiplier, the Infectious Multiplier feature is triggered. This adds +1 to the multiplier to 4 to 12 randomly chosen positions, and positions with no multipliers are prioritized.

The Bonus Round triggers when you land 3, 4 or 5 scatters in view, and this gives you 10, 12 or 15 free spins, respectively. You can gamble to get up to 20 free spins, but you then risk losing the whole feature. The grid is expanded to size 5x5 in the bonus round, which gives you 6,250 ways to win. Wins still pay both ways, and the position multipliers never reset. The multipliers can go as high as x10, and you win +2 extra spins if all positions have a multiplier.

Finally, non-UK players, and anyone eligible, may take advantage of the Bonus Buy option. Simply click the Bonus Buy button, and you can pay 100x your stake for 10 free spins. You can also pay 500x your stake for 15 free spins, or gamble for up to 20 free spins. The bonus round triggers organically once in 310 spins on average.

Review Summary

It’s nice to finally see AvatarUX try something brand new with the PopWins concept, but we admittedly expected the positions to “pop” and expand the grid together with the multipliers being added. This might come in future installments, but in Zombie aPOPalypse MultiPop you simply get new symbols with an increasing position multiplier. The concept is solid enough to carry this game for sure, even with an x5 cap on the base game multipliers.

The comic book zombie theme will probably hit home with a certain crowd, and it goes well together with the creepy soundtrack. The understated horror adds to the tension, and everything is enhanced when the bonus round triggers. Not only does the grid expand, but the non-resetting multipliers can now go as high as x10. The 20,000x potential is more than solid enough, and we are excited to see what comes next in the MultiPop series.
