Gameburger Studios has had great success with 9 Masks of Fire and some of the follow-up copycats, and these abound also in their classic-inspired Hyper range. Hyper Star takes a different route however, and it leads straight to Sin City with a bolted on Gonzo mechanic Rolling Reels Multiplier Trail as the headliner feature. The glitzy visuals and jazzy soundtrack might seem superficial to some, while others gobble it up like the free drinks they serve at casinos.

We can reveal up front that Hyper Star contains nothing experienced players haven’t seen before, but moving along the multiplier trail is still a somewhat exciting prospect. Not least when it’s enhanced in the bonus round, and getting tons of extra spins, like the feature touts, seemed like a cake walk. Random jackpots add an extra layer of excitement, and the overall 7,250x potential is certainly solid enough for some high risk/reward action.

The golden star Wild can land on reels 2, 3 and 4 only, and it steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combinations. The wild holds no value of its own however, but the 5 premium symbols pay between 2.5 and 10 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins.

The Rolling Reels feature is active in all stages of the game, which means that all winning symbols are removed from the grid. This makes way for new and/or existing symbols to drop down to fill the gaps, and the process goes on as long as you keep winning.

The Win Multiplier increases per consecutive Roll, and this Gonzo style feature awards a multiplier of x2, x3 and x5 for the first, second and third Roll, respectively. The Bonus Round, which we’ll cover below, comes with an enhanced multiplier trail of x3 (default), x6, x9 and x15 as the top-tier multiplier.

You need 3+ FS scatters in view during the same Rolling Reels sequence to trigger the Bonus Round, and the Star Wild can step in for scatters to help trigger the feature. You get 8 free spins per triggering way, but reel 4 and 5 is not considered when it comes to free spins awards. The most free spins you can start with is 32, but the announced ‘frequent retriggers’ did seem to hold water. You need at least 3 scatters (or 1 or 2 combined with wilds) to retrigger the bonus round.

The game’s Jackpots can be won in both the base game or during the bonus round, and you’ll notice that all wild symbols are collected below the jackpot display. The Jackpot Bonus may trigger at any time at the end of a Roll sequence, and this awards 1 of the 3 jackpots. These are the Minor, Major and Grand jackpots, worth 15, 100 or 5,000 x your stake, respectively.

Review Summary

The glitzy in-your-face Vegas presentation might appeal to a certain crowd, but it’s bound to repel others just as strongly. We’ve seen the theme so many times that we’re almost numb to it by now, but at least Gameburger has moved away from the endless 9 Masks of Fire copycatting with Hyper Star. It’s a decent enough installment in their Hyper range, with the ever-popular Gonzo mechanic Rolling Reels Multiplier trail going strong in all stages of the game.

Making Wilds stand in for FS scatters is a decent touch, and it did help us not only trigger the bonus round, but also land plenty of extra spins. The 5,000x top jackpot is worth more than twice what’s on offer in many 9MoF clones, but you don’t get the illusion that it can drop at any moment. A feature needs to trigger first after all, and we don’t think Hyper Star is going to be a huge smash hit like Gameburger’s ‘claim to fame’ scatter prize installments.
